Fantastic slow burn Southern horror

The story was well crafted with a slow but solid pacing. Characters were distinct and interesting. (My only issue with the characters was naming two of them Lawton and Luker--too similar)

Without spoilers, my daughter and I were talking about it afterwards, and kept finding things that made the story more complex. This was fun. Definitely recommend.

Fantastic for 80% of it, and so-so at the end

In general, my review of this is consistent with that of the reviews my friends give. Everybody describes it as a phenomenal book, and it is: it has a great premise, is fun and interesting, and is well-told. But when you ask about the ending people sort of remember and say, "yeah, there was that." It's not awful, but it's memorably not as good as the rest of the book. That doesn't cause me to give the novel less than 5 stars overall.

As for the audiobook narration, it was very well done. Slattery has both a solid narration voice and character voice.

Charming and we'll performed

Carol Burnett is a charming and down to earth legend in entertainment. This work is a fun, hilarious and touching walk through that entertainment career.

Excellent and innovative novel

The book was innovative, fun and interesting.

Without giving anything away:

The characters were unique, interesting and all evolved deliberately throughout the book in great ways. I was specifically worried about feminist and/or lesbian characters being written by a man and/or executed in a preachy way, but both concerns proved to be baseless. I will specifically call out how each character had a story, instead of just being a part of the main character's story. Each had unique relationships with the main character, but also to each other.

The setting is super-advanced sci-fi, with no attempt to actually explain how or why things work, but rather focused on effects that could be observed. That said, you could feel consistency throughout the book and marvel with the main character about the effects.

There were twists that I never saw coming and I enjoyed each of them. There were also many elements that could have gone very wrong which were handled with grace and skill.

As for the audiobook itself, Natalie Naudus did an excellent job of voicing each character, even in some very complicated situations.

Good ending

While I consider this the weakest of the trilogy, it was a worthy conclusion.

The narration was also the weakest, with some characters having mixed or jarringly different voices.

Great sequel read well

This was a book a friend strongly recommended, and I'm glad they did. I really enjoyed the story, characters and world. The performance was good, though not perfect on the voices.

Dark but interesting

The book had an interesting premise, and some good characters, and it was very well performed. That said, the main character was very angsty, and the book get very dark at times.

A Favorite Book

This is the first book in a series, but can easily be read as a stand alone novel. It's a favorite of mine, and on rereading it, thought it was much better the second time after seeing how it leads into the other books.
