Historia
Seduced by her employer’s son, Evangeline, a naïve young governess in early 19th-century London, is discharged when her pregnancy is discovered and sent to the notorious Newgate Prison. After months in the fetid, overcrowded jail, she learns she is sentenced to "the land beyond the seas", Van Diemen’s Land, a penal colony in Australia. Though uncertain of what awaits, Evangeline knows one thing: The child she carries will be born on the months-long voyage to this distant land.

What a long way we have come!
Revisado: 01-19-25
The treatment of people has come such a long way. Even further when one considers women.
This book depicts a snapshot in history, that many know little about. It brings characters to life who depict people with wealth and power to those that don’t. The book is very good and leaves me a little sad because we have come a long way and still have a ways to go to even out opportunities for all.
I highly recommend this book.

Respect for women who came before me
Revisado: 12-29-24
Love hearing what women did in the past. Such brave pioneers. Dedicated. Honorable. This book teaches us about a group of women who recognized they can serve their country during WW1. They make a huge difference and served well. We should be aware of history and this book illustrates a piece I was not aware of. Enjoyed this book!

Details that depict the big picture
Revisado: 06-23-24
Such a good book describing life during the rise of Hitler through the end of the war. How these women came together for a common cause; how they lived through it. Highly recommend listening to it. Or reading it.

Bringing light to a segment of this sad war we have missed
Revisado: 04-01-24
The Vietnam War was controversial and everyone had an opinion no matter what our age was during the conflict.
I never thought of the plight of women serving in the hospitals Of course, they should have been acknowledged. There should never had been a question.
I’m glad this book brings their service and sacrifice to light. It was a sad time for all.

Saga of a family
Revisado: 12-15-22
True story of Polish family from time leading to war, through it and after. I was riveted and they truly were fortunate. They suffered and in the end reunited. It teaches me how fortunate I am to have avoided that because I was born after. We need to know this history.

Enjoyed and learned
Revisado: 09-11-17
I was very entertained by the story and enjoyed learning about certain aspects of life in Italy as a painter. I learned more about the Black Plague. Definitely had my attention from beginning to end!
