Love the Horror!
Revisado: 10-02-23
This is another great book by L.V. Pires. Terrifying and atmospheric. Anne Towry is trying desperately to hang on to her manor home and relationship but there are so many real and unreal things trying to take everything from her. Add to that a horrible family curse that seeks her out and is determined to destroy her and you have the making of a nightmarish story. I'll definitely be sleeping with the lights on tonight. A perfect read for October. I can't wait for the next book.

Fantastic story with so many twists and turns. The setting was so eerie and mysterious. A story with many layers. I did not expect the ending. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

I will never look at our country the same after listening to this. I can’t even imagine the mindset of someone putting themselves and their children in such extreme danger. So much tragedy. It was brutal but now I know.

If only she could be at peace, but this great descendant of the famed mutineer, Fletcher Christian, longs for adventure and change. Her wily spirit finds just that when a steamship arrives ready to trade.

A Great Adventure!
Revisado: 06-12-20
A fun story for kids or middle-grade readers. I love the connection to Fletcher Christian and Pitcairn Island. I can imagine one of his descendants would be just like this. Beautiful scenery and a clever twist at the end.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

I almost gave up
Revisado: 05-19-20
I listened to this story because I had heard repeatedly how great it was. I'm appalled by how much abuse and neglect Tara Westover had to endure. Some of it seemed almost impossible to believe, but that is often how abuse is. I believe education can be a saving grace for people so I appreciated that, but I also didn't buy that Westover was as ignorant as she proclaims to be and then just figured it all out that quickly. I'm not sure why so many people liked this book as much as they did. There are many memoirs of people overcoming obstacles. This one lacked the depth and personality I was looking for.

Great reading!
Revisado: 05-19-20
I couldn't have gotten through this book without the audio version. It's incredibly long and sometimes long-winded. Listening to the book let me disappear into the story and it's certainly a classic for a reason. The performance is great as you would imagine from a professional reading a classic tale.
