Historia
Preble Jefferson can see five seconds into the future. Otherwise, he lives an ordinary life. But when a confrontation with a cop on a New York City subway goes tragically wrong, those seconds give Preble the chance to dodge a bullet, causing another man to die in his place. Government agencies become aware of Preble's gift, a manhunt ensues, and their ambitions shift from law enforcement to military R&D. Preble will do whatever it takes to protect his family, but as events spiral out of control, he must weigh the cost of his gift against the loss of his humanity.

Only for John Wick fans
Revisado: 01-24-25
If you liked John Wick movies you may like this, perhaps. For me, I'm only engaged enough to want to get to the end. But it's a hard slog; now only half paying attention. Everyone in this novel has too much information about too many things. Everyone makes stupid choices all the time. It reads like a Marvel comic from childhood. NSA behavior is especially comical. Reader is good except he makes the child even more annoying. 'Nuff said.

Historia
At War with Ourselves is the story of helping a disruptive President drive necessary shifts in U.S. foreign policy at a critical moment in history. McMaster entered an administration beset by conflict and the hyper partisanship of American politics. With the candor of a soldier and the perspective of a historian, McMaster rises above the fray to lay bare the good, the bad, and the ugly of Trump’s presidency and give listeners insight into what a second Trump term would look like.

Pop historian & conspiracy susceptible VJ team up
Revisado: 05-18-23
Some good segments throughout but in the end the narrative frays at the seams under the weight of the personal baggage of the two podcasters. As one example (from someone old enough to know): Nobody at the time thought the insult "Wacko Jacko" had anything simian about it and the suggestion is risible. The podcaster who immediately affirmed this is doing the linguistic equivalent of those people who see a bunch of numbers and assign a "conspiranoia" style connection between them. It tells you more about the bias and naivete of these two more than any other example; but it is by no means a singular illustration. Such leaps of foolishness appear throughout. Go ahead and listen but be skeptical. They are shaping a narrative shakily upon a weak foundation and beneath a leaky, ideologically burdened roof. It is certainly packaged well but scrape away this veneer of authority and you find a cheap historical presentism.

Historia
Mary Tyler Moore made her name as Dick Van Dyke's wife on the eponymous show; she was a cute, unassuming housewife that audiences loved. But when screenwriters James Brooks and Allan Burnes dreamed up an edgy show about a divorced woman with a career, network executives replied: "Americans won't watch television about New York City, divorcées, men with mustaches, or Jews." But Moore and her team were committed, and when the show finally aired, in spite of tepid reviews, fans loved it.

Very enjoyable book
Revisado: 02-12-23
My mother passed away recently. She and I used to watch reruns of the MTM show together decades ago. Like Mary Tyler Moore she was a de facto feminist but eschewed the title as a lifelong Republican (notably she disliked Trump though). The book helped me imagine the show as she might have when she was younger. And I liked the narrator too. Highly recommend.

In 1974, a revolutionary group calling itself the Dread Scott Brigade held up the old Shawmut Bank in Boston's Audubon Circle. Money was stolen. And a woman named Emily Gordon, a visitor in town cashing traveler's checks, was shot and killed. No one saw who shot her. Despite security camera photos and a letter from the group claiming responsibility, the perpetrators have remained at large for nearly three decades. Now it's up to Spenser to solve her murder.

Historia
In Stone Cold, Police Chief Jesse Stone has a problem - actually, two problems - dead bodies turning up, and no clues. A man takes his dog out for a run on the beach, only to be discovered hour later with two holes in his chest. A woman drives her Volvo to the mall to do some grocery shopping, never makes it back to her house and is found dead. Investigating a serial killer in an affluent suburban town is difficult, and with the added pressures from the town selectmen and media, the heat is turned up on Jesse. The harder these outside forces push against him, the more Jesse retreats into himself, convinced - despite all the odds - that it's up to him alone to stop the killing.

Historia
The Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald is a collection of 45 novels and short stories by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's short stories have themes that not only relate to the problems and culture of the Jazz Age, but were also about the promises and despair encountered by the young, as well as aging. Love and relationships between two mismatched or unlikely characters, such as people who are unlikely to develop a spark of romantic interest between each other, is common.

Historia
In 2013, just two years after the popular overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian military ousted the country's first democratically elected president - Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood - and subsequently led a brutal repression of the Islamist group. These bloody events echoed an older political rift: the splitting of nationalists and Islamists during the rule of Egyptian president and Arab nationalist leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. Fawaz Gerges, one of the world's leading authorities on the Middle East, tells how the clash between pan-Arab nationalism and pan-Islamism has shaped the history of the region.

Edward Snowden touched off a global debate in 2013 when he gave Barton Gellman, Laura Poitras, and Glenn Greenwald each a vast and explosive archive of highly classified files revealing the extent of the American government’s access to our every communication. They shared the Pulitzer Prize that year for public service. For Gellman, who never stopped reporting, that was only the beginning.

Perhaps Parker was building a house or taking charge of a boyscout troop given the inane detail with which he tries the reader/listener's patience. The narrator is fine as usual. In fact he should have been awarded hazard pay or mental health benefits for this drudgery.
