Historia
Shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread Award, Paradise was characterized by the Nobel Prize committee as Abdulrazak Gurnah’s “breakthrough” work. It is at once the chronicle of an African boy’s coming-of-age, a tragic love story, and a tale of the corruption of African tradition by European colonialism.

Beautiful book
Revisado: 03-22-24
Gurnah’s writing is superb. His description of the caravan and where it went was so realistic I felt I was on the journey. The end was sad and hopeful at the same time.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 05-12-22
Doerr has created a masterpiece, deftly interweaving characters from the past, present and future in a heart-opening and heart-breaking story, united by Antonius Diogenes' ancient tale of a perfect place and the costs to achieve it. Doerr's prose is beautifully crafted, making one want to stop just to re-listen to how he creates his ideas with lengthy metaphors, his unusual use of verbs. I am in awe of his writing, and the way he has created his story. He also accentuates the value of uncovering ancient, seemingly lost writing through one of his characters. His characters are all lovable, even the villain, despite his flaws. The readers are superb. I didn't want this book to end, and could listen to it over and over. The best book I've listened to in many years.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

I’m Convinced
Revisado: 12-28-20
This is one of the best books I’ve read on the social conditions that is, caste, that plague our nation. To begin with I thought it was an overstatement to call what exists in the US “ caste,” but the author gave so many examples that by the end of probably the first chapter I realized that caste in the United States is undeniable. I am now anxious to read her first book. If I could recommend a book for the Pulitzer Prize, It would be this book.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK
Revisado: 02-16-20
American Dirt is a book everyone should read. Well written, its characters almost leap to life, into a hellish reality that makes it hard to stop listening. I came to love Lydia and her son, the two Honduran girls they meet, as well as the coyote who takes them on the final leg of their journey. This book describes the perils of migrants heading north, their strength, humanity, and hope. These are not “invaders,” as they’re portrayed by American xénophobes, but people fleeing danger and intolerable oppression. The description of conditions on “la bestia,” the freight train they ride on, of the people who aid them on their way and those who exploit them, is gripping in its detail. Although it’s a long book, I didn’t want it to end; the characters had wormed their way into my heart, and I wanted to become friends with them, to help them in any way I could. It’s an unforgettable story, but not a unique one. It’s one that is continuing, due to the terrible conditions in Mexico and Central America. I am grateful to the author for writing this valuable book.

Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Moved to tears
Revisado: 10-16-19
I was moved to tears by the end of this book. Snowden’s courage, with the full knowledge of what would probably result from his revelations, was gargantuan. In my mind, he is a true hero. It is clearly written. As a non-techie, he was also able to explain, through the use of analogies, much of what would have gone over my head otherwise. I learned a lot and although he had my respect in 2013 when he first disclosed the mass surveillance program of the NSA, he has gained far more respect now. His strict reading of the First and Fourth Amendments of the Constitution, and the government’s disregard of them, shows his patriotism far more than the patriotism of those who call him a traitor. We definitely need more Edward Snowdens in this world, and in particular in the US government. His revelations are one reason why people, both foreign and citizens, no longer trust the US government. All I can do is hope that getting this information out will help to reverse this problem.

Historia
In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for nine dollars an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough and wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War.

Required reading
Revisado: 10-03-18
This book should be required reading in every high school civics class and in every US history class in both high school and college. Bauer has given an account of something hidden from the public eye that everyone should know. Riveting, accessible and eye-opening. Also read on Audible with perfection.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-06-15
I really didn't like the choppiness of the reader. He was constantly stopping where there was no need to stop. Also it was such a painful story, especially the part in the jungle, and I didn't think he tied it together very believably at the end. It was repetitive in places. I don't understand why it received the Booker award.
