Historia
Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool, from Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Richard Russo, is storytelling at its most generous. Nobody’s Fool was made into a movie starring Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Jessica Tandy, and Melody Griffith.

fabulous character study
Revisado: 11-07-22
a fabulous character study of small town upstate New York life. It's kind of about nothing, but slyly philosophical. I felt a great deal of affection for the characters (with a few exceptions that were unlikeable, but still well rendered) by the end.

underdeveloped characters
Revisado: 01-11-22
enjoyed listening to it as a kind of soap while I did stuff around the house. Lots of good ideas and characters but felt these were underdeveloped. same with the plot-- so much going on, but painted in broad strokes rather than delved into.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

Great story about storytellers
Revisado: 11-10-19
Very moved by this, as well as intrigued along the way as it's a good mystery. Glad this storyteller is taking on his grandfather's mantle.

Less profound than it claims
Revisado: 09-20-19
Struggled to finish it and was very annoyed by the end. I missed the wit and the comedy that interlaced so well through profound themes in Atkinson's other books.
Narrator had bad German pronunciation, but that will probably only irritate German speakers.

Historia
Luisa 'Lu' Brant is the newly elected - and first female - state's attorney of Howard County, Maryland, a job in which her revered father famously served. Fiercely ambitious, she sees an opportunity to make her name by trying a mentally disturbed drifter accused of beating a woman to death in her home. As Lu prepares for the trial, the case dredges up painful memories, reminding her small but tight-knit family of the night when her brother, AJ, saved his best friend at the cost of another man's life. Only 18, AJ was cleared by a grand jury. Propelled into the past, Lu realises that even if she could learn the whole truth, she probably wouldn't want to.

Revisado: 08-02-19
Laura Lippmann has had a few slumps since I devoured her first works, but she brings all the urgency of those addictive first novels to this, with a lot more sophistication. Just buy it.

Historia
Why exactly Charley Bordelon's late father left her eight hundred sprawling acres of sugarcane land in rural Louisiana is as mysterious as it was generous. Recognizing this as a chance to start over, Charley and her 11-year-old daughter, Micah, say good-bye to Los Angeles. They arrive just in time for growing season but no amount of planning can prepare Charley for a Louisiana that's mired in the past: as her judgmental but big-hearted grandmother tells her, cane farming is always going to be a white man's business.

Historia
The brilliant new novel from the author of the New York Times best seller Everything I Never Told You. Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down. In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is meticulously planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colours of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead.

Historia
For a runaway slave in the 1840s South, life on the run can be just as dangerous as life under a sadistic master. That's what 15-year-old Naomi learns after she escapes the brutal confines of life on an Alabama plantation. Striking out on her own, she leaves behind her beloved Momma and sister, Hazel, and takes refuge in a Georgia brothel run by a freewheeling, gun-toting Jewish madam named Cynthia.

Great writing, bit too weird in the end for me
Revisado: 03-30-18
A strange book. Loved the beginning. The end not so much, but I tend to prefer when supernatural aspects are grounded in the weirdness of is humans and this world. But writing that I begin to question myself. Worth a listen!
