Historia
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Fast-paced, but to what end?
Revisado: 09-07-23
Story kept me interested, but very disappointed in the "end". It was kinda like a movie that ends with the discovery that it was all just a dream. The writing about encountering life after millennia seemed to be less fleshed out (haha) than the pre-encounter writing. For example, after the human and AI horrors that ensued the Galahad, the introduction of the oversized frog was just plain silly. And the way the character just let go of his obsession with Cap? It felt like the author had a good idea for a sci-fi novel, but didn't know where to go with it.
Narration pretty good - only breaking character a few times.

Historia
Lydia works as translator for the Logi cultural attaché to Earth. They work well together, even if the act of translating his thoughts into English makes her somewhat wobbly on her feet. She’s not the agency’s best translator, but what else is she going to do? She has no qualifications and no discernible talent in any other field. So when tragedy strikes and Lydia finds herself at the center of an intergalactic incident, her future employment prospects look dire—that is, if she can keep herself out of jail!

Gotta love a sci-fi whodunit.
Revisado: 07-02-23
Story kept me interested; the premise even more so. (You can read a "what the story's about" elsewhere). I will add that I love the idea that there would be translators to take what's being "spoken" in an alien's head and translate it back and forth. The murder mystery proceeds as it should, though it lurches somewhat toward the end.
Sadly, I was frequently brought out of the narrative by the narration - she should stick to what she knows, and New York-ese ain't what she knows. A long drawl seemed to be her default notice that someone else was speaking. Annoying to say the least. But she did Lydia's voice just fine.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Great Choice for my Re-entry into SciFi.
Revisado: 01-22-23
Immensely satisfying "read." I know painfully little about math or physics, can barely remember rudimentary science. Nevertheless, I didn't drift even once during this book. Much to my delight, I felt as if I understood everything. I've begun to see even my own body in terms of an incredibly well-planned and calibrated piece of evolution. The story, woven back and forth in time, was easy to follow, and, once Rocky was introduced, simultaneously fun and moving.
