Historia
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children. Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing.

What a RIDE!
Revisado: 05-12-24
I found myself very angry with both of Suzanne's parents. The peril they put their children in. The neglect of those children. The broken promises. I came away feeling proud of Suzanne and where she is today after all she endured.... not to say she didn't learn anything. She definitely learned how to be resilient and self-reliant. Not terrible things to have in your skillset tool box, but not things that should be taught in such a way...or at such a young age.

Historia
As a park ranger with the National Park Service's law enforcement team, Andrea Lankford led search and rescue missions in some of the most beautiful (and dangerous) landscapes across America, from Yosemite to the Grand Canyon. But though she had the support of the agency, Andrea grew frustrated with the service's bureaucratic idiosyncrasies, and left the force after twelve years. Two decades later, however, she stumbles across a mystery that pulls her right back where she left off: three young men have vanished from the Pacific Crest Trail.

The unknowing is the worst
Revisado: 05-12-24
Both for us, the listener, and those who are still in a state of unknowing. This is a difficult listen if you have ever lost someone. Literally lost someone. They are neither alive nor dead. They are just lost. I was struck by the efforts that strangers will go to in order to find another stranger who is lost in the wilderness. I'm also struck by the idea that people walk the Pacific Crest for fun... for that does not sound the least fun for me. This took me a place I would never be..in the world of the SERIOUS hiker. And the good and very very bad of that experience.

Historia
Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a yearlong conversation unlike any they have ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.

A Peek Into Their Lives
Revisado: 05-12-24
They trade off reading, much like a back and forth letter or conversation. While in no way "one of the regular people", they are still yet just regular people. Imperfect. Struggling with their past, individual and collective. Trying to be parent and child in the best way they knew....and trying to do it better going forward. While the rest of us don't have the baggage of being a Vanderbilt, I think we can all relate to learning why our parents are who they are and did what they did. Hopefully, we can come to the place of understanding, forgiveness, and moving on while our parents are still with us.

If not for the AUNT
Revisado: 02-24-23
No self respecting Californian, let alone an entire town of them, would pronounce the word "aunt" as "awwnt". It's "ant" out here.
I don't know if this is a narrator issue or what. But someone has yet to catch this "clearly these people aren't really in California" error that continues. And to top it off, Jill can never just refer to "Jackie" but "My AWWWWWWWWNT". We know who she is in relation to you.
And why hasn't "Diamond Lilly's" not been shortenedto "Lil's"? You ALWAYS know a non-native/outsider/someone that doesn't live in "this town" because they call everything by their full name. "Townies" shorten names. Even "Lilly's" would make sense by now.
Love the stories....but damn if this stuff doesn't pull me OUT of the stories.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Well, yea. It’s set in January 2021
Revisado: 12-16-22
If the “politics” of Covid restrictions bother you…. Like masks, distancing, and vaccinating…. This is going to bother you. The story is set in January of 2021. Those things WERE a thing. We also had a POTUS elect and if you recall there was a bit of a, oh what are we calling it?….. Insurrection on January 6, 2021. THESE THINGS ARE MENTIONED.
If the mentioning of actual events bother you, that’s on you.
The story is a transition from the Bosch years to the Ballard years. Or careers. Bosch served in that other political event, Vietnam, so he’s WELL past the age of an active officer. He was born in 1950 putting him at 71 in this book. If this series continues, having Harry in an advisory roll with Renee doing the heavy lifting, is natural.
But if current events are going to trip your trigger, you’re just going to have to deal. Connolly didn’t choose the events and the inclusion of them isn’t “politics in your escapism”. At least no more than any other “current events”. I mean, Harry’s Vietnam service was highly political at one point in time. At least he was fighting FOR the government…..

Historia
Captain Sass Collier got her crew to Denali. Can she bring them home again? Marooned 35 million miles from their home moon. Not enough fuel to reach orbit again, let alone Mahina. The locals seem friendly. But the planet Denali itself is hostile, from volcanoes to microbes. Thrive has 6 months until their launch window opens - and closes. The prizes Denali offers are jewels beyond price. An actual starship awaits on the sea bottom. The greatest nanite scientist of the system can finally tell Sass how she came to be immortal. Be careful what you ask for.

WOW!
Revisado: 11-17-21
The headline for this review is what I said, out loud, when I finished this book. Other utterances and emotions during the course of listening to it were “WTH?!”, an actual LOL, and a sniff as my eyes started to tear up.
I had been impatiently waiting for this book to drop since I finished book 3. I was not disappointed. Ginger’s creativity and Veronica’s performance are at the top of their game. I feel like I know the characters. Some I loved and some I hated. It was a great, and emotional, end to this storyline. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Revisado: 10-10-21
Unfortunately this story continues and probably will for years to come. From Jean’s own words and actions it’s clear that she kept her husband from his children as much as she could from day 1.
I wish Kasem Cares all the best for 50 stars.

Happy Accidental Comparison
Revisado: 09-11-21
Purely accidentally, I was listening to a Firefly novel when this went live. I listened to both at the same time because both kept drawing me back. I can honestly say that the Thrive characters and stories are just as good as those we loved in Firefly. Ginger Booth has recaptured the magic I’ve been missing. And the narration performance really brings the characters to life for me.

Historia
From award-winning journalist David Kushner, Alligator Candy is a reported memoir about family, survival, and the unwavering power of love. David Kushner grew up in the early 1970s in the Florida suburbs. It was when kids still ran free, riding bikes and disappearing into the nearby woods for hours at a time. One morning in 1973, however, everything changed. David’s older brother, Jon, biked through the forest to the convenience store for candy, and never returned.

Powerful
Revisado: 08-29-21
Is this a true crime story? Yes. But even more so it is a story of loss, grief, family, community, love, and reconciliation.
It was a single sitting, up until 3am, book. Compelling and wonderfully performed.
We should all be so gracefilled in the face of tragedy.

As good as advertised
Revisado: 08-23-21
I read the description for the Thrive series on Facebook multiple times and even traded messages with the author before buying the first two audiobooks. It is as good as advertised. I usually only listen when I’m driving or running. But I couldn’t put these down and listened all day to get through them. The story and audio performance are both exceptional and I can’t wait for the next book to come to Audible.
