Historia
As Prime Minister for three years and Home Secretary for six years, Theresa May confronted a series of issues in which the abuse of power led to devastating results for individuals and significantly damaged the reputation of, and trust in, public institutions and politicians. From the Hillsborough and Grenfell tragedies, to the Daniel Morgan case and parliamentary scandals, the powerful repeatedly chose to use their power not in the interests of the powerless but to serve themselves or to protect the organisation to which they belonged.

Service not Power
Revisado: 06-01-24
Although this can occasionally come across as a little holier than thou the author does get across some very important points. One can only hope that at some point the core thread, that politicians are elected to serve the people and not have power over them, will rise to the surface in the political arena.
The book benefits from being read by the author, who does an excellent job.

Historia
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

Powerful & Inspiring - A depressing ending (Trump)
Revisado: 02-26-19
One of my all time favourite autobiographies. A powerful story of what can be achieved through love, hard work, education and passion. I particularly loved the insight into the mind and character of Barack Obama.
As a Brit I was enamoured by the relationship Michelle has with the Queen.
The most depressing part of this story is that we move from the love, compassion, integrity, dignity and honour of the Obama family, which you will learn much about as you listen to this story, to the hideous, misogynistic, corrupt and vile bigotry of Donald Trump. This was clearly a traumatizing time for the Obama’s as evidenced in Michelle’s voice whenever she speaks about him.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle

Joanne Froggatt’s storytelling is masterful
Revisado: 01-19-18
I loved this book from start to finish. As the story was set in my home county back home in England I felt an immediate affinity. The evolution of each of the characters was handled at a good pace. The story picked up to a terrific, tense and suspenseful conclusion. Some of the subject matter could have been more gory or excessive in the hands of another writer but Sarah Denzil kept it at just the right level of detail to convey the situation and events without being a gratuitous. I’m not going to talk about the storyline or plot as I would like others to enjoy this production as much as I did.
As good as the story was, it was elevated further by the best performance of an audiobook I have ever experienced. Joanne Froggatt’s delivery was perfect in every single way, tone, speed, volume, enunciation, depth. I could listen to this again just because of her reading. Great job!

Slow starter but finishes at a gallop
Revisado: 01-11-17
Chose this after listening to The Life We Bury, which to be honest is a much better book.
I was wondering at first whether I had made the right choice, the story, especially the trial was a bit weak but after that the intrigue and the pace increased and what seemed like a mundane case had plenty of twists and turns. I found myself saying "I knew it was him/her" "Oh no it wasn't, it must have been her/him". Eskens leaves things nicely set up for the continuation of Max Rupert's life as a Minnesota Cop.
Not top of the list but worth a read/listen nonetheless

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Don't judge a book by its cover, or a man by his outward demeanour. Heartwarming & delightful!
Revisado: 10-03-16
I wondered for the first 15-20 minutes why I had selected this book but thereafter was delighted that I had. This is a wonderful story of an old curmudgeon who really does have a big heart, and how a neighbor with a polar opposite personality consistently helps him to show that. Underlying the whole story is a mans love for his wife. The world would be a better place with more Ove's, albeit a bit more of a grumpy place at times.
The only thing I can really say is read/listen to this book and if you are not moved by it then you have a heart of stone.

Compelling, gripping, beautifully written
Revisado: 09-20-16
The story is beautifully written and dragged me in completely. I have never read a book where I felt and lived the emotions of the characters as much as I did with this book, especially the main character (Rachel). The high quality writing is elevated to new heights by the performance of Penelope Rawlings who has perfect pace, tone, intonation, feeling and modulation. This is a must listen, but beware you will live and feel the raw emotion of the heart breaking anguish of a mother whose young son has been taken.

Intriguing, well written, but slow starting and long
Revisado: 03-10-16
I did enjoy listening to this story but early on wondered whether to stick with it. I think i was about three hours in before the it started to grab me, and that was more to do with Sadie Sparrow's back story. Eventually, as the characters were built and the twists and turns arose my interest grew.
At the end, however, I'm not sure I was fully satisfied. Whilst all the loose ends were tied up it was more of a "happily ever after" put a bow on it.
So, good story, meandered a bit on the way, some good character construction, a number of twists and turns, all wrapped up nicely. Would have benefited from more editing and being a couple of hours shorter.

A mixed bag
Revisado: 06-16-15
This was at times highly entertaining, poignant, touching, serious, informative, self indulgent, witty, hilarious, and generally enjoyable. However, I think Ms Poehler set the bar so high with her TV and theatre work that I was expecting something better. Nonetheless I would suggest that it be added to the list of audio books to listen to unless you have a really good alternative recommendation.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.
