The cast list is fantastic, though this is definitely not for kids. Some very adult themes, and much of it is very dark. Not having seen any other version, I thought this was brilliant.

One of the best books I've had on Audible. The mysteries, plot twists and murders keep coming, yet the story maintains its own faultless internal logic. Very dark in places, and definitely an adult title, but very compelling.

This book is seriously excellent and really gets into the minds of the "minor races" from Mass Effect that we didn't get to see arrive in the ME:Andromeda game. It's very dark, creepy, has a very high (and nasty) body count, has some pretty deep and well developed characters and motivations, and major plot twists almost to the end. The Audible version is very well performed by Tom Taylorson, the voice of Scott Ryder in ME:A, who did a great job getting those Elcor and Volus voices just right.

Always good to see Kris again, but this book is flawed by spending so much time in a huge space battle that just goes on and on and on with nothing interesting happening, just fleets flying around and killing each other ad infinitum. It just got tedious and repetitive.

I got this as a bargain, but it booked me at once and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The quirky characters, the plans that never go right, the joking around. Underneath it all however the writing is intricate and clever. A lot of later stories have elements foreshadowed ahead of time. Things that seem trivial come back as meaningful. And I love the duality of tech and magic conflicting.

Trying to be too clever, and much too wordy, long descriptions where short phrases would have done. A good idea poorly executed.

This book has an excellent idea and character at the core, and I kept wanting it to get better. Sadly, the writing is patchy at best, with some basic writing mistakes (such as tortured dialogue and repeated sentences) that a professional editor in years gone by would have cleaned up.
The worst of it was the painfully sing-song style of reading, which really wound me up with exasperation.
Missy is a potentially good character, though she tends to be too much of a superwoman who never makes the slightest mistake, and is able to shrug off any difficulty. She needs to be faced with some real moral challenges where there is no single right answer.

Not the hardest mystery to solve, but a great setting, gorgeous local characters and a deep background make this one of my top Audible faces of all time. Ian Carmichaels' performance is brilliant too.

Any additional comments?

A very competent ships captain, assisted by a ship-ignorant ship's surgeon, sail off for some fraught wartime adventures. The captain disdains spit and polish, preferring real combat training.

Yes, this is pretty darned close to Patrick O'Brian's wonderful Napoleonic navy saga beginning with Master and Commander. Here Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are reborn 500 years later. Now, that isn't necessarily a bad idea. Honor Harrington is, after all, heavily inspired by Horatio Hornblower.

I'll stick with the series and see how it settles down. It's usually worth seeing the author settle in to her/his world and characters, and see where it takes them as they gain their stride.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes, but only because it has important plot developments in the overall story. As usual there are a few excellent action sequences, with an awful lot of inner reflections and tutorials on 19th century technology, which is great is you like military or scientific history like me.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The author is rather self-indulgent with all the long internal reflections by characters on their situation. Some of this is OK, but it gets repetitive and tiring. He also uses a few expressions far too frequently (e.g. "and then he sobered") which can start to grate a bit.

How could the performance have been better?

This reader almost made me give up. His delivery is certainly clear and precise, but there are two big problems. He speaks every sentence with emotional intensity, and never lets up, which means there is no real contrast between moods or atmospheres. Much worse though is it seems he never bothered to listen to any of the earlier books, so he pronounces almost every name completeley differently from the previous reader. I don't know whether that is just bad preparation, or an oversight by the series publisher, but such an obvious mistake should never be made in today's audiobook industry.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No, it would not work even in a series. A movie would lose all the underlying complexity and would probably not make much sense.
