Historia
Waylaid on all sides by hostile aquatic lifeforms that emerge from the deadly waters every night, the dozen survivors fight under the guidance of their de facto leader, Delta, who led the insurrection against the children's robot overlords just days before. But even as the twelve struggle against the planet-and each other-to build their new society, the yoke of their digital oppressors has not been lifted.

I was expecting an epic struggle for survival among a hard-pressed group of individuals. Instead, the books focused a lot more on interpersonal struggles and didn't resolve a lot of the external troubles the group was facing. It just wasn't what I was expecting, others may enjoy more. I also didn't care for the morally bankrupt leadership and the general lack of concern over it.

Historia
The Banished Lands has a violent past where armies of men and giants clashed in battle, but now giants are seen, the stones weep blood, and giant wyrms are stirring. Those who can still read the signs see a threat far greater than the ancient wars. For if the Black Sun gains ascendancy, mankind's hopes and dreams will fall to dust....

Slow Burn ❤️🔥
Revisado: 04-09-25
the pacing of this book is slow. The narrator speaks slow. The story line progresses slow. It's a modern fantasy that reads like an old fantasy. I liked the different POVs and whole I enjoyed some more than others I never groaned to hear it switch. The chapters often have time jumps between them (probably with space or a separator in the text) but in the audio format the narrator barely paused. Caught me off guard a few times.
Overall I liked the series but will probably wait till the others go on sale before continuing.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

I've been waiting to read this book for a long time.
Revisado: 04-25-24
I wanted to wait a little to read hopefully the first 5 storm light books back-to-back, unfortunately I may finish the first 4 too soon, since I flew through this book. Brandon Sanderson doesn't disappoint, his setting and world building is as good as any other series he has written. I am excited to fill in my knowledge of the cosmere with this series. My only (minor) complaint was that this book has a pretty slow pace at times.

Historia
Thousands of years ago, Earth's terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life - but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity's great empire fell, and the program's decisions were lost to time. Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth. But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed. And it's been waiting for them.

People said this book wasn't as good as the first. I have to agree, but it still was an enjoyable listen. Has a couple scenes with "horror" vibes.

DNF: Story wasn't going anywhere
Revisado: 02-23-24
I rarely DBF books, but with 50+ titles in my library waiting to be read, I realized I don't have to finish the books I don't like. Ordination is one of them. I love Michael Kramer, but this story is just too slow and with no hint as to what is coming. I read up to THE 'Ordination' and more, but the book has no cohesive plot. The initial story arc has been completed, but we have no idea where the rest of the story is going. The Character's are not great. We still know almost nothing about the main characters. Personal preference item, I don't like the seediness of the world. Too many disgusting slavers, rapists, etc. Yes they get "justice" but I would rather we saw less of that underbelly to begin with. Rather than wait around another 10 hours of audio to see if the author decides on where this story is going, I am leaving to checkout some other listens.

Historia
The last interstellar colony ship is down to its final batch of humans after the robots in charge unhelpfully deleted the rest. But rebooting a species and training them for the arduous task of colonisation isn't easy - especially when the planet below is filled with monsters, the humans are more interested in asking questions than learning and the robots are all programmed to kill each other.

Fun Little Read
Revisado: 02-09-24
lot of familiar tropes here. I know the author is a comedy writer, but this book isn't particularly funny. Irreverant and silly at times? Sure. Overall, pretty solid little sci-fi novel. I enjoyed it and was sad it was over.

A Classic Story, but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 01-25-24
Mad respect for JRR Tolkein and this work. There were lots of stories and elements I enjoyed. Though I certainly knew a lot of spoilers for this book (how can you not?), I still enjoyed finding out how the story unfolds. The pacing is just too slow and the style of world building is just so different than modern fantasy. still an enjoyable series. I am glad I read it.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Slow but Moving
Revisado: 12-02-23
I liked this book more than the first in the series. The pace was a little quicker, but I found it odd that the story was split so completely in 2 (not switching POV). I would guess switching POV with multiple characters often is likely a modern fantasy trend. Still, Tolkein's work is really beautifully written. I like the potry, lore, and vivid descriptions of setting.

Partial Review - The Great Divorce
Revisado: 12-02-23
The Great Divorce - finished 11/2023: Another underrated CS Lewis work. I appreciated the clear presentation that this work was NOT what Lewis thought Heaven/Hell to be. Despite Lewis's brilliant way of revealing moral truths with vivid poetic imagery, I think sometimes his poeticism causes him to ignore some Orthodox doctrine. In this work, he leans pretty close to Universalism among other things. Still, because his work is fictional (with Moral truths) I can ignore some of the questionable implications of this analogy.
Overall, it must be stated, the Great Divorce is a brilliant work exposes the truth, that unless we truly die to self (along with everything we have, desire, and are) we can never enter Heaven and experience the truest joy of God's presence.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

A Classic brought to Life
Revisado: 10-25-23
While this isn't the type of fantasy I typically read, I respect the amazing impact that this book has had on many of my favorite series (like the Wheel of Time). The prose is quite beautiful, and the performance by Andy is truly incredible. My only comment is that the narration gets very quiet at times, which I think is due to Andy's voice acting, but should have been fixed in editing.
