Is able to create a present tense for events that took place long ago, in the different person that was herself (all of ourselves) as a child. Truly lovely.

Brilliant adventure story, unworthy narration
Revisado: 06-11-23
Dumas understood human motivations and the society of his age wonderfully. There are hardly better adventure stories. The narrator has only three or four voices for four times as many important characters. His women’s and “foreigners’” voices were particularly bad. I personally think he made the Count sound too sinister.

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Classic Americana, getting a bit harder to digest
Revisado: 06-11-23
When the woke-crazy English department at my school banned the book because of use of the n word and other unflattering depictions of slaves and maybe Southerners, I was irritated. Reading/listening to this again after several decades, I found my own tolerance for those elements had frayed some. I still think it’s a wonderful novel, that it promotes basically sound values at the same time that it depicts historical attitudes accurately, and should therefore continue to hold its place in the canon. Twain is a true American original. Nevertheless, not every inch of it is comfortable even to a skeptic of today’s values and sensitivities, and a well-turned preface might help preserve the integrity of this American classic.

Historia
Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures.

Underplayed. Unparalleled writing.
Revisado: 06-11-23
Branagh offers a quiet reading, presumably in a well-reasoned effort to not get in the way of a perfectly wrought text. I think the reading could have conveyed meanings in the text better. A good preface or afterword might also have been useful to help bridge the century since this mysterious text was written.

Historia
Flannery O’Connor’s astonishing and haunting first novel is a classic of 20th-century literature. It is the story of Hazel Motes, a 22-year-old caught in an unending struggle against his innate, desperate faith. He falls under the spell of a “blind” street preacher named Asa Hawks and his degenerate fifteen-year-old daughter. In an ironic, malicious gesture of his own non-faith, and to prove himself a greater cynic than Hawks, Hazel founds The Church of God Without Christ but is still thwarted in his efforts to lose God.

Historia
Scarred by the senseless death of their son and baffled by the engulfing chaos of the 1960s, Joe Allston and his wife, Ruth, have left the coast for a California retreat. And although their new home looks like Eden, it also has its serpents: Jim Peck, a messianic exponent of drugs, yoga, and sex, and Marian Catlin, an attractive young woman whose otherwordly innocence is far more appealing—and far more dangerous.

He is a full-grown man, alone in dense forest, with no trail to show where he has come from and no memory to tell who or what he is. His eyes are not the eyes of a human. The forest people take him in and raise him almost as a child, teaching him to speak, training him in forest lore, giving him all the knowledge they have. But they could not solve the riddle of his past, and at last he has to set out on a perilous quest to find his true self - and a universe of danger.

Historia
This question obsessed Renaissance writers, none more than Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, perhaps the first recognizably modern individual. A nobleman, public official, and winegrower, he wrote free-roaming explorations of his thought and experience, unlike anything written before. He called them essays, meaning “attempts” or “tries.” He put whatever was in his head into them: his tastes in wine and food, his childhood memories, the way his dog’s ears twitched when it was dreaming, as well as the religious wars....

Childish narration
Revisado: 02-26-22
Bakewell’s book is not lacking in insight. However, it is written as for a high school student. The narrator, in the meantime, reads as though the audience is eight years old. Her Frenchier than the French pronunciation of names and words in that language is independently irritating. Because I am interested in the subject, I endured the whole thing, most of it at 2.0x speed. Don’t subject yourself to the same unpleasantness.

As cute as this story is, the era for being able to suspend disgust for the depiction of an English gentleman dripping so richly with superiority
and noblesse oblige that every colonial subject and servant he meets swoons before him has passed.
