Too much pro abortion polemic
Revisado: 06-13-23
Could not finish the book owing to the pro abortion polemic that the author puts in the mouths of every character at every point.

Historia
For years, Christians have been asking, "If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?" It turns out that many believers have been giving the wrong answer. It is not heaven. Wright outlines the present confusion about a Christian's future hope and shows how it is deeply intertwined with how we live today. Wright asserts that Christianity's most distinctive idea is bodily resurrection, and provides a magisterial defense for a literal resurrection of Jesus. Wright then explores our expectation of "new heavens and a new earth".

I have yet to encounter a N.T.Wright book that disappointed me and this was no exception. Especially challenging were the passages about the. refugee camps and the third world debt problem.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Historia
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house - but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own....

Historia
On March 25, 1942, nearly a thousand young, unmarried Jewish women boarded a train in Poprad, Slovakia. Filled with a sense of adventure and national pride, they left their parents' homes wearing their best clothes and confidently waving good-bye. Believing they were going to work in a factory for a few months, they were eager to report for government service. Instead, the young women - many of them teenagers - were sent to Auschwitz. Their government paid 500 Reich Marks (about $200) apiece for Nazis to take them as slave labor. Of those 999 innocent deportees, only a few survived.

This is essential listening of a very important book about the Holocaust. I was amazed at the cruelty that the SS could inflict on these young women. And amazed that the women somehow survived.

Historia
In this gripping, intimate memoir about health, illness, and the invisible reverberating effects of our medical system, Standefer recounts the astonishing true story of the rare diagnosis that upended her rugged life in the mountains of Wyoming and sent her tumbling into a fraught maze of cardiology units, dramatic surgeries, and slow, painful recoveries. As her life increasingly comes to revolve around the internal defibrillator freshly wired into her heart, she becomes consumed with questions about the supply chain that allows such an ostensibly miraculous device to exist.

Good story with a few problems
Revisado: 05-11-21
I pretty much liked the story Ms. Standefer told especially as she lived in my home town of Tucson, AZ. I get the feeling that she didn't much like if here as many transplants from colder regions..
Seems like her problems all started when she like many young people have a feeling of indestructibility when she let her insurance lapse.
Would a HMO have suited her better? I have had a few serious problems over the years - like a recurrent brain tumor - but I never had to be concerned with paying crushing medical debt. But I have had a good job.
And I have had to deal with pre authorizations but I didn't see it as a conspiracy of the medical system. Just something you have to take care of.
It was interesting when she traveled to Africa to visit the source of the metals in her device.
But at the end of it all Ms. Standefer is pretty negative about her whole life situation.

Historia
Shelby was in a devastating car accident, and everyone in town thinks that she was undergoing more physical therapy in Denver. Instead, Shelby's mother enrolled her in a clinical program to stop the panic attacks that started after the crash. The treatment erased Shelby's memory of the accident, but she can't help feeling as if a piece of herself is missing, that the treatment took more than the doctors claimed.

Wonderful life affirming story
Revisado: 03-19-21
I think one of best things about the story is the narration. Humorous in all the ways that a teenager would see life. The story goes unexpected places that I wouldn't have guessed from the start. That Shelby's memory returns is completely in keeping with ideas about memory not being localized.
