While it is easy to see why this book is so acclaimed, it is also hard to "recommend" it to anyone. There is no question about the brilliance of James Joyce and what a feat it was to create this masterpiece. At the same time, it is a feat to listen to it.

If you ever wanted to know what it would be like to be inside the mind of another person for an entire day, certainly partake of this novel.

It is too much to digest in one listening .. it could be alifetime study.

I realize now why so many authors refer to it: they are bragging about the fact that they made it through.

I will probably become as pedantic about it myself!

PS The reading is magnificent.

The lighthearted manner with which this was written and delivered made it a thoroughly enjoyable "read." I was especially impressed with the reader's voices and inflections and just wish someone had told him how to pronounce California names (Junipero with an "H" instead of a "J" for example). But he was so good in his delivery that I easily forgive him this omission in research. I wonder if you have to be from California to really appreciate the zaniness of the characters who are very much everyday folk out here!

There are a lot of characters with unintelligible names, added to technologies of the author's creation. It seemed inordinately difficult to keep everything and everyone straight, and by the time the book was over I didn't care about anyone who had been in it. This is so different from my reaction to Altered Carbon where I really felt invested in the characters and who lived and who died seemed to matter (even though they could be re-sleeved anyway)

Altered Carbon was a marvel and it flowed. This follow-on book seemed strained and forced and I was disappointed.

Would you try another book from Peter Clines and/or Ray Porter?

Absolutely NOT. The story was slow moving until the last 3 hours ... I guess it was supposed to be a build up but for the first 10 hours I kept wishing something would happen. This writer is NOT a new Stephen King. He does not have the ability to paint the visual pictures. The reader was so unremarkable that I had a hard time keeping awake listening .. when I noticed I'd drifted off either in sleep or just daydreaming I didn't even bother to go back and see if I had missed something. His voice and accent are good, but he is not an actor and there is no impact quality to his deliverance.

What was most disappointing about Peter Clines’s story?

It went on and on and got nowhere ... All the action is packed into the last 3 hours. There is a LOT that is irrelevant that we are doused with ... could shave left out all the stuff about Nate's work, for example. Just more time wasted and didin't add to the story at all.

What aspect of Ray Porter’s performance would you have changed?

He needs acting lessons! all the characters, even tho accents were a bit different, had the same tonal quality

Did 14 inspire you to do anything?

Yes, it inspires me to call Audible and ask for a refund. Unfortunately they can give me back only my money . not my valuable time.

Any additional comments?

Wish I could remember where on Audible I got the recommendation for this book so I will know NOT to listen to that source again.

What made the experience of listening to W Is for Wasted the most enjoyable?

Kinsey as as funny as ever and every bit as sharp.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters and narration of course.

What does Judy Kaye bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I've loved her portrayal of Kinsey and she's at the top of her game with this one.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!

Any additional comments?

As we near the end of the alphabet I realize how much I'll miss the anticipation of another wonderful installation in this series ... unless there is "life after Z" or she starts counting one, two three ...

What disappointed you about Earth Unaware?

The story line and production of this book are so sadly inferior to the Ender series that it is misleading to even mention the Ender series when "selling" them. The reader for Viktor, one of the main characters, has a high pitched voice and adds such a sardonic tone to all his narration that I ended up listening to over half the book in double time just to make it tolerable. I loved the Ender series so much and wanted so to learn the backstory that was promised, but only the last 2-3 chapters of the book really held any substance. It's hard to believe that this was written by the same author.

What could Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Written a better script. There is a lot of insignificance that I suppose was to create empathy for the characters .. only it didn't.

How could the performance have been better?

Dump the reader for Viktor first of all. His voice is high pitched and his tone is full of contempt. Other readers whom we've heard in OSC's books are starting to sound tired and bored. I'd rather have had a single good reader than a tired cast.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The last chapter gave some promise for the next book, which I'd already bought because I "trusted" the Ender author to give me good quality.

Any additional comments?

This is SUCH a disappointment!

The books consists of short chapters, each one it's own story, then tied together to form the whole. This is a series that I have loved from the beginning, but for some reason this book just missed the mark. For one thing, the reader didn't seem quite as effective as in the past and all the characters sounded the same. This is a reader I've previously given high praise. Have I just listened too much or is there really a difference in this particular book? Was the reader perhaps as bored as I the listener?

I could tell that some of the stores were supposed to grab me emotionally. Unfortunately most of them missed the mark.

If you love the series so far, I recommend just staying with those wonderful memories and pass by this addition.

For me this book went on a little too long, but I suppose that's because he was setting it up as the start of a new series. I'll pass on the series, but I must say that I was seriously impressed with the narrator. He has an incredible range of character voices and delivered them all to perfection. I"m going to look for more from him to add to my library.

When I think of Tom Clancy at his best I think of a book like Cardinal of the Kremlin or Hunt for the Red October. GONE is that Tom Clancy .. this one is full of manufactured twists and plots that don't have the human touch that made his earlier books so wonderful to listen to. John Clark, who has always been an outstanding character, suddenly turns into a "super hero" impervious to torture and pain and able to get up and run an operation after days of capture and torture and mistreatment .. and on and on.

First of all, the reader was terrible. Her Bostonian accent for Jane Rizzoli just didn't work and grated on the nerves. The story moved along pretty well until the last quarter .. It was like the author didn't know how she would end it and then just pushed an ending together and well, it was quite unsatisfying. I guess it was supposed to be a "surprise ending" but in fact it was just a disappointing one. In fact, I don't think I ever really understood the reason behind the murders .. oh well. I guess the author is getting tired and certainly the reader isn't worth looking for more from ..so off to find other books to read
