Probably better in writing
Revisado: 08-22-24
I think the worst things about this audiobook are that the main character isn’t likable, and that the performer has a grating voice (especially for male voices). Unfortunately the interest of these tolls tends to compound. I think this is probably a better read than a better listen.
As for the story, I saw another review compare it to The Shining, and I would say in addition it’s a lot of Alien and Aliens but w/o the actual alien(s). And these aren’t bad influences, they’re some of the best horror stories ever. But seldom does it feel like the book is delivering something that its influences don’t (besides a different atmosphere which is sometimes very well executed, to which I want to give the author all due credit; The scenery of the luxury ship in distress is often vividly depicted).

Historia
American Exceptionalism and American Innocence examines the stories we’re told that lead us to think that the U.S. is a force for good in the world, regardless of slavery, the genocide of indigenous people, and the more than a century’s worth of imperialist war that the U.S. has wrought on the planet. Roberto Sirvent and Danny Haiphong detail just what Captain America’s shield tells us about the pretensions of U.S. foreign policy, how Angelina Jolie and Bill Gates engage in humanitarian imperialism, and more.

An essential listen

A reckoning of the truths inherent to America. I hope this can be an important ingredient in the re-ignition of the Anti-War movement

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Come for the drama, stay for the everything
Revisado: 09-15-22
Like many memoirs to many people, the selling factor is the drama behind the career. But McCurdy proves to be a master writer and every word builds so well from the previous to tell an impactful story and detailed timeline while remaining concise. You can feel every punch, and know that the force you feel from each one can only be a sliver of their true weight

Sona Movsesian didn’t wake up one day and decide to become the World’s Worst Assistant. Achieving such greatness is a gradual process—one that starts with long hours and hard work before it eventually descends into sneaking low-dosage edibles into your lunch and napping on your boss’s couch.

Take that, Conan. Apparently this review has to be 15 words. I said what I wanted to say

This is more meta, but a good start
Revisado: 01-12-21
This isn’t what I needed— that being actual instruction. That isn’t to say this is worthless however. It is a good resource for searching resources, essentially. This doesn’t give you lessons about playing the piano, but it gives you decent information about avenues you could explore to do so, often in an encouraging. It has good things to share, like explaining how it’s actually accessible for everyone, and learning is for each of us. This is actually what finally gave me the perspective I needed to finally put the basics into place to understand music and the way it works, which is what I failed to learn as a child in lessons and class and as a 23 y/o man had thought I could never do. This doesn’t teach you music theory, it explains on the most basic level what music theory is. This doesn’t offer you much theory itself though
