Muddled Motivations, Shifting Setting
Revisado: 03-01-25
It was difficult to connect with the protagonist because his motivations seemed unbalanced given the stakes. The setting changes often, and sometimes in ways that don't suit the narrative. Haig includes historical figures that distract from the plot. Because they make little impact on timeline, they make little impact on the plot.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

If you love languages and hate colonization, this is for you. It's educational and riveting. I "couldn't put it down." High praise to Kuang for writing fiction that matters.

Gripping and Atmospheric
Revisado: 06-02-24
This setting is dark and fresh. I couldn't put this down. Strange magic tugs at every narrative string, and a beautiful balance is struck between horror and the wonders of boyhood.
The voice actor was well-fitted for the title. I'm immediately picking up the second novel in the series.

Poorly Edited Audio File
Revisado: 05-23-21
Great story but choose another version before purchase. The narrator is spot on for this Gothic horror classic, but unfortunately the editing team didn't remove the bloopers before this was uploaded here. It's almost as if the editing stopped 8 1/2 hours in. I absolutely loved this novel and had it been professionally edited, I would have kept the audiobook.

Marvelous Representation
Revisado: 01-08-21
Tevis delivers a realistic, imperfect female character. It's a marvelous and dignified representation of what it's like to exist in a female body, to have an interest in something almost completely male-dominated, and to battle the impacts of institutionalization.

Historia
Our favorite white trash zombie, Angel Crawford, has enough problems of her own, what with dealing with her alcoholic, deadbeat dad, issues with her not-quite boyfriend, the zombie mafia, industrial espionage, and evil corporations. Oh, and it’s raining, and won’t let up. But things get even crazier when a zombie movie starts filming in town, and Angel begins to suspect that it’s not just the plot of the movie that's rotten. Soon she's fighting her way through mud, blood, bullets, and intrigue, even as zombies, both real and fake, prowl the streets.

Sluggish
Revisado: 01-10-19
This title is slow-moving compared to the rest. None of the new characters are vivid in my mind and I struggled to recall the supporting characters from the previous book. The questions raised in the protagonist's mind are so slow to be answered that by the time they are, I've forgotten the basis of their significance. I would have liked to see more growth in the main character.

Excellent Perfromance, Mediocre Book
Revisado: 12-27-18
I loved the 90's film and the 2018 Netflix series inspired by this book so I was eager to read it. The interpretations of the original are better. A few articles on the literary analysis of this book piqued my interest but I didn't find it as satisfying a read. I understand this book was significant to the development of the horror genre but I didn't connect with any of the protagonists. The subjects of any interest, the house and the caretakers, were not developed in any way. No growth. Certainly not enough backstory, no solid revelations on what created something so monstrous. There were suggestions, but I felt it was left to the wayside. The protagonist was the only character with any real character development, which is sad considering the others had plenty of potential. Not to mention they had access to a psychiatric expert, which could have easily been a source of exposition, and the conflict was there which made the conditions perfect for growth. The performance of this book was absolutely perfect, though. It was worth the read once, but with Audible titles I prefer something with replay value so unfortunately I don't think this will be a keeper.

Revisado: 09-09-18
I picked this up a while back when it was featured as a daily deal and was pleasantly surprised. It's an easy listen. Great coming of age story. The segments told from the fox's perspective were cozy and really made the book as good as it was.

Wait! It Mightn't Be What You Think--
- De Gillian en 04-05-17
Relevant to the female condition.
Revisado: 09-03-18
A book every woman should read even if it isn't comfortable, and it shouldn't be read in pursuit of an ending. People speculate whether it's a prediction of things to come, but that interpretation is too literal for me. I got more value from recognizing the little ways in which it was relatable. Excellent narration.
