Historia
Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out.

Interesting story but not her best
Revisado: 11-10-23
First of all, read this out of a book. Do NOT listen to it because the narration is so bad it’s distracting. I was constantly pausing the audible to think how the sentence should have been read. Walls is a better writer than actor/reader.
The story is okay, thrilling in some parts, but so many characters died! One after the other, and not in a sad moving way. The characters just died and ended their role in the story line. I thought that showed a lack of creativity.
I really enjoyed The Glass Castle and Dish so maybe memoir is her strong suit and not novels.

Based on a decade of research and on interviews with many of Mao's close circle in China who have never talked before, and with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him, this is the most authoritative biography of Mao ever written.

Incredible story, poor narration
Revisado: 09-28-22
The life and ruthless ambition of Mao are powerfully presented in this biography. The evil in his heart would surely classify him as a psychopath. He had no compassion or value for life or anything beside what would promote himself and bring more power. Stalin almost seems like a Boy Scout by comparison.
The audible reading was too flat, almost mechanical in tone. It made listening a chore but I soldiered on to the end because of the content.

Great story, awful narration
Revisado: 06-04-21
The story was suspenseful and kept me guessing the whole time. One twist and turn after another. But the narration of Nina was stiff and awkward, not a single sentence was read naturally. Every bit of it was read like she was trying to create and effect even when one wasn’t needed. That part was distracting and got on my nerves but I still enjoyed the story and stuck with it to the end.

Historia
The Picture of Dorian Gray, first published in 1890, is still one of the most riveting novels ever written. The genius plot has everything to capture and hold the imagination, from lust, debauchery, and doomed romance though blackmail, murder, and the disastrous effect of a morally depraved French novel. That’s not even counting the visits to the opium den, the addiction, the stalking, or the string of deaths - accidental or self-inflicted.

Great story but a terrible performance
Revisado: 05-18-20
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a brilliant work. The plot and the themes of the book are rich for study and discussion. This reading of it however is flat, robotic, and totally boring. I don’t recommend this version at all, only got it when there was an Audible sale and it was severely discounted. I’ll hesitate next time.

As entertaining as an episode of Seinfeld!
Revisado: 03-31-20
This is perhaps the most entertaining book I’ve listened to on Audible. The plot is interwoven with such genius and with such quirky characters that it reminded me of great, smart comedy. The story had me feeling conflicted between anxious to see how it resolved and not wanting it to end.

Ugh
Revisado: 03-09-19
This book seemed like one long bitch-fest. She did nothing but gripe about her husband the whole time through, even when describing the early days of the relationship when she was a badly behaved college girl sleeping with her married professor. She has such disdain for her husband, building a federal case to prove that he’s an untalented, undisciplined, unfaithful, and shallow glutton. Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?! The reader is left wondering the whole time, if she’s so smart and superior, why didn’t she leave him? Why did she ever marry him in the first place? Many loose ends are never wrapped up, like the root cause of the problems for her disturbed son, the claim on her husband by the daughter from his first marriage, etc. I can not recommend this raunchy story to anybody. I regret reading it all the way to the end.

Historia
Published posthumously in 1964, A Moveable Feast remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most beloved works. It is his classic memoir of Paris in the 1920s, filled with irreverent portraits of other expatriate luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein; tender memories of his first wife, Hadley; and insightful recollections of his own early experiments with his craft.

I’m giving up on Hemingway
Revisado: 04-27-18
This was my third Hemingway book and again I’m feeling flat and wondering what was the point. At the end of every one of them I’ve thought “It’s over? I was still wondering when the story was going to pick up and really start.” I guess I’m totally missing it but I don’t see the greatness of Hemingway I always hear about. The most interesting parts of this book are the description of life in Paris, his friendship with Gertrude Stein, and his misadventures with F Scott Fitzgerald. Still, blah.

Too political for my tastes
Revisado: 04-12-18
It’s fine if Courtney wants to have some of his characters be political activists but I wish he wouldn’t use his novels as a platform to push his agenda. I only made it through this book because it’s a sequel to a book I enjoyed.
