I’m literally standing in Whole Foods to say this. I’ve read a few other of Wendy Webb’s novels now, this one stands out as not following the formula, although formulaic is not really the word I would use to describe her work. This one is haunting in the best kind of way, and even though I knew well in advance who the bad guys were, I really enjoyed the process unfolding. Give it a shot!

New narration is great!

It’s always so jarring to adjust to a new narrator, but Francis did an amazing job. She really embodied the characters in the way that faithful readers (listeners) are used to. These folks continue to embrace, dark themes, but the light always wins. I have learned a lot from Shani.

It’s an adjustment

OK, I’m not going to lie. I saw the previous reviews, saying that the new narrator, Penny, was a jarring difference. And it is. But I was determined to adjust to her different voice, accents, and embodiment of these characters. We have had 7 previous books to know the voices of the characters as done by Sheila. And this is not Sheila. But I was determined to get there, and I did. The story is excellent and she is a good voice actress. Just not what we were used to.

An adventure across time!

I enjoyed this book and the price was right. No spoilers, but it the future is prominent. I really want to give a shout-out to Josh Hurley, the narrator. Not only was he well cast and believable, but his voicing of female characters was so good, I checked to see who the other narrator was! All Josh.

Love anything read by Nano Nagle!

This is a lovely walk through English history as seen through the eyes of one piece of land. It follows one family from present day to the distant past and back again through the generations. It is unlike the format of standard narratives, but it has beautiful prose that are a spoonful of sugar with the darkness of the past. I enjoyed it very much. It’s a nice palate cleanser between other books. And Nano Nagle rocks.

What made the experience of listening to The Raider the most enjoyable?

I've been tearing through this series, and I really think The Raider has been one of my favorites. The plot is different than many of the others, and it focuses on a different area.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Robby Boyd is very compelling, a historical figure imbued with fictional (albeit enjoyable) endowments that make him a great romantic hero.

Have you listened to any of Antony Ferguson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to all of the Highland Guard series. I have to admit, I miss Robert McNab a bit, as some of the Gaelic words are pronounced differently, and that is a bit jarring. I am adjusting though, and Antony gives a good performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The strongest man in Scotland had one weakness- her.

Any additional comments?

This series sneaks up on you. I am coming from Outlander, not just romance novels, so I like the history stuff. I am really enjoying the series and dread finishing it soon.
