Alanson, you'd better be writing your fingers off right now.

It's kind of stunning that after 17 books, I'm only MORE invested in this series. And it's equally stunning that I now desperately need number 18.

As I reflect on what I read, there was some brilliant foreshadowing to the climax of the book, and the pickle everyone is in now. Joe's seat-of-his-pants problem solving may have fallen short this time.

How much do you give away in a review? I don't want to give anything away, other than my stomach is in knots at that ending right now, and I might even need some antacids.

I think I may need to do some yoga or something, maybe watch some cute puppy videos while Craig Alanson and RC Bray work to relieve me of this stress.

I really enjoyed this story, and frankly, I look forward to the next one. I also loved Duke, and want just as much of him in the next book. When IS the next book, by the way??

I enjoyed the story immensely. It's a fascinating character study of someone struggling to deal with the traumas of her past in a way that also keeps her life both complicated and affords her opportunities that seem to help her career, ironically.

I only have one thing that bothered me just a little bit, and only in that it would pull me out of the story at times: why would Beula (and other Chinese characters) have a Cantonese accent? The author didn't mention one, but there it is. I understand that differentiating character voices is a challenge, but assuming an Asian character is an immigrant or foreigner is...something that perhaps the narrator should reconsider in the future. Otherwise, she did a wonderful job, as always.

I absolutely loved this book. The author brings Pino's story to glorious, harrowing life. It's amazing how many people Pino encountered who made their marks on history, and to see that Pino also made his own mark.

Possible spoiler:

"Mon General" called himself a man of shadows, but Pino was, in his own way, a man of shadows himself.

I highly recommend this series. I've read a great deal of fantasy, especially of the vampire/witch/romance variety. Harkness breathes new life into a genre that has lately become stale. Also, the performance of the book is wonderful. She reads it so well, and does a great job of capturing a male voice without the artificiality of trying too hard to deepen her voice enough. I highly appreciated it.
