Couldn't get past the premise.
Revisado: 12-01-24
My bad for thinking that this would be anything like The Expanse, which was riveting in it's near future plausibility. Setting this "thousands of years" into the future and then populating it with characters that you could find today in any faculty lounge removed any any intrigue for me. Even having the aliens show up (two hours into it) didn't spark my interest. Thanks Audible for your lenient return policy.

Historia
From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

A good story poorly told
Revisado: 04-07-24
The novel 2054 sounded good so I decided to listen to the prequel, 2034, first. I regret the decision. 2034 is an interesting enough story about near-future geopolitics and how it might disastrously unravel. But way too much time was spent trying to get into the heads of the half dozen or so main characters, and far too little on the details of how tactical nuclear strikes might happen, and their effects. Whole cities are wiped out in a sentence while the perpetrators mull over how to deal with child custody issues or how great grandpappy might view their actions. The authors are not good enough writers to pull that off, and readers interested in the procedural and technical details of a possible limited nuclear war will be disappointed. Do the authors know the difference between tactical and strategic nukes? Not from what I can tell. The premise is as dubious as the motivations of the main characters. There is very little drama or suspense, and I don't care what happens in 2054.

Historia
After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate

A preposterous story clumsily told
Revisado: 12-08-21
This is just another ticking bomb story, It is distinguished from the others only by being loaded with references to our recent political past which are noteworthy, if not interesting, given the co-author. But, as the resourceful female secretary of state travels the world battling a hi level conspiracy facilitated by a useful idiot ex-president, one wishes for more detail and verisimilitude, and less moralizing and clumsy plot twists. I will be be passing up the sequel.

Historia
Now in his sixties, big-wave surfer Joe Sharkey has passed his prime and is losing his “stoke.” The younger surfers around the breaks on the north shore of Oahu still idolize the Shark, but his sponsors are looking elsewhere. One night, while driving home from a bar after one too many, Joe accidentally kills a stranger near Waimea, a tragedy that sends his life out of control. As the repercussions of the accident spiral ever wider, Joe's devoted girlfriend, Olive, throws herself into uncovering the dead man’s identity and helping Joe find vitality and refuge in the waves again.

Started out well
Revisado: 05-31-21
This character study of an aging pro surfer started out well, Set mostly on Oahu, it was an interesting and picturesque portrait of Hawaiian surfer culture from the sixties forward and had a great cameo of Hunter S. Thompson, during the time that he wrote The Curse of Lono. But I found the search for redemption tedious and unconvincing. Since that takes up about half of the book I can't recommend it.

Hard to follow
Revisado: 11-01-20
This complex story of revenge and political intrigue within a galactic empire would be better read than listened too. The alien names and places are hard to follow, not to mention the non-sequential storyline. Gave up on it two thirds of the way through; something I rarely do. .

This rollicking romp around the galaxy is fast paced fun. Very well produced and performed. Action packed while uplifting. A nice job of world building in the first of a series. Hope to see the rest of them on Audible.

A Disapointing Continuation of Ender's Game
Revisado: 08-18-12
If, like me, you thought Ender's Game was an interesting fast paced story with a nice mix mixture of action and character development my advice is to settle for that and not pursue the series. The dialog was endless and varied from trite to overwrought. The science fiction concepts were adequate and would have served well if the book was half as long. Perhaps other areas of Scott Card's are more interesting. Maybe I'll explore that, but not in the foreseeable future.

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

A classic beautifully read
Revisado: 08-18-12
What disappointed you about The Sun Also Rises?
No dissapointments
What could Ernest Hemingway have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
You've go to be kidding.
Would you be willing to try another one of William Hurt’s performances?
Definitely. His reading was brilliant. Just enough differentiation and personalization of the characters without sounding like a staged performance. Perfect pacing.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Sun Also Rises?
What a stupid question.
