I like mysteries, not secrets
Revisado: 04-02-23
I just listened to The Boy Under the Table by this author and i loved it. This one, not so much. We're led to believe that the bad guy is one person when in fact, it's someone else, and we don't learn the truth until about the last hour of the book. The characters know who he is, but the reader has no idea it's not who we thought. i can get on board with some trickery in books, but this was not one. I didn't particularly connect with the characters. It's meant to come together in the end but it's not believable at all.

Historia
From the queen of white-knuckle suspense and searing family drama comes a harrowing glimpse into the real world behind the headlines. This is a novel of immense power and compassion - one that will move all who listen to it. Tina is a young woman hiding from her grief on the streets of the Cross. On a cold night in the middle of winter, she breaks all her own rules when she agrees to go home with a customer. What she finds in his house will change her life forever. The Boy Under the Table is gritty, shocking, moving and, ultimately, filled with hope.

Spending all my credits on Nicole Trope

finished in 24 hours which is rare for me. I start so many books and lose interest in the first hour, but I couldn't put this one down. it's so, so good. Brutal, but triumphant. I'm spending all my credits on this author!

Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. gross wtf
Revisado: 11-06-22
the performance was great, but I gave it one star because I don't want anyone else to listen to this. I was feeling kind of creeped out a while ago, but I just got through chapter 12, and I will not be listening to the remainder of this. I don't know how old Kellen is, but he's an adult, and I believe Wavy is only around eight. there's what seems like a romantic relationship forming between them and it's making my skin crawl. do not recommend unless you're into that kind of thing.

Could have skipped several hours
Revisado: 06-05-16
This story is interesting, but the second half of the book is tedious and repetitive. I could have skipped hours of this and still gotten it, but feel less annoyed. The same phrases were repeated so often, I sometimes wondered if I has accidentally rewound it. The narrator was good, but I would not recommend this book.

I used to be vegan
Revisado: 01-08-16
But the cheese in this book ruined me. The narrator does a good job. But the cheesiness and the redundant description of the interactions of the main characters is really tiring. I was so often rolling my eyes and saying come onnnnnn... How many times can a person have their hair tucked behind their ear by someone else? Granted, I somehow missed the fact that this is a YA book, and I've never read one before (and never will again) so I have no point of reference. But I kept going because I wanted to find out what happens. Maybe I'm naive--I'm purposely ignorant of pop culture, and I usually read short stories and more "literature" than this. But it was five bucks and had good reviews. I don't feel terribly upset about the hours I spent listening to this (while I was at work, so) but I certainly didn't gain anything from it. The characters are likeable (I still think Holder is hot) and the storyline flows fairly well. I just wished I had a fast-forward-30-seconds button handy too many times to say this was *good*. I was truly interested in the story. I didn't know what was coming (again, I don't usually read/listen to this kind of thing) and I was pleased with the outcome but I wouldn't recommend this to my friends. Young adults, maybe. Ten years ago, maybe. But as I waited, begrudgingly, for the end, I felt kind of stupid. So keep that in mind. It ended the way I wanted it to. Which is fine. But understand, you absolutely will not come away from this book feeling that you've learned something.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

I want my 15 hours back
Revisado: 03-19-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who's interested in extensive, detailed history of Chicago and the World's Fair. The detail is excruciatingly tedious and redundant. If you are interested in H. H. Holmes, you will be sorely disappointed by this book. It's 90% slow, monotonous, repetitive description of the building of the fair, all of its difficulties and irrelevant information on the background and personal lives of the many creators of the fair. Even the parts about Holmes are disappointing.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His pompous, arrogant tone made the book even more unbearable.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Nope.
Any additional comments?
As others have said, this book is really only for history buffs. I was interested in H. H. Holmes and I think the description of the book is misleading--the bits about Holmes are few and far between, and almost as boring as the fair narrative. I began fast-forwarding this book after waiting longer than I should have for it to get interesting. It never did. I became agitated as it droned on--where was the serial killer?? As others have said, I could read the Wiki on Holmes and learn more than I did throughout the torturous hours of listening to this book. I wish I'd stopped after the first hour. It was the most boring book I've ever read or heard. It was slow and repetitive, the narrator's pretentious tone adding to the monotony. Waste of time and money. If I had the book in print, I would burn it.
