Unconvincing
Revisado: 02-09-25
Feels like the story and narration were based more on watching mob movies set in NY than any knowledge of the Providence underworld.

Historia
There were times when Bertie Wooster, the fictional narrator of these stories, was thought of as being at least a trifle feather-brained. However, he had a valet who seemed to know everything about everything. These are among more than 300 short stories written by a man who began a short-lived career in banking after his college days. However, it didn’t take long for P. G. Wodehouse to decide he didn’t like that kind of job, and he began writing in whatever spare time he had.

Distracting narration
Revisado: 02-25-24
The narrator is very distracting. Also, some of the stories are early and don’t involve Wooster and Jeeves.

Historia
The national burglar of France faces off against the national detective of England in two unforgettable stories. Originally released as Arsene Lupin vs. Herlock Sholmes because of copyright issues, we have taken the liberty of replacing the counterfeit names originally published with those of the original sleuth himself, Sherlock Holmes (in the place of Herlock Sholmes) and his faithful Dr. Watson (in the place of Wilson). The result is an experience for the ages that you won't want to miss.

Seems to have been written as a grudge
Revisado: 12-17-23
I enjoyed this less than the first book. It was as if it was written as a grudge against Arthur Conan Doyle. The narration was as enjoyable. Not sure how definitive the text is because not all of the Wilsons were changed to Watsons. (After copyright ended, there was no need to use the names Sholmes and Wilson.)

Historia
Loretta Thurwar and Hamara “Hurricane Staxxx” Stacker are the stars of Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly-popular, highly-controversial, profit-raising program in America’s increasingly dominant private prison industry. It’s the return of the gladiators and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom.

Surprised how much I disliked it
Revisado: 12-17-23
Based on reviews and accolades, I expected to like this book. I figured it was the type of book that would be good on audio. However, the number of characters introduced and the number of storylines confused me at times. The biggest let down was the hokey renderings of the characters, especially the two main characters, along with the redneck and the singing guy.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Narration made it even better
Revisado: 01-20-19
This is a great novel. As NYT reviewer noted, the description (as opposed to naming) of characters makes it a complex read. I felt the reader (with accent) really brought the book to life, especially her performance of the “wee sisters”!
