Fascinating

If you like British royal stories you'll enjoy this. Top-notch writing, Narration good enough, could have benefited from variation in tone and pacing. Excellent overall.

Historia
Brooklyn's Hasidic community of Lubavitchers is turned upside down when family tragedy strikes and everyday life changes forever for Zev Altshul. He is first placed into the care of the closed and close-knit community where he grew up, but soon realizes he can't stay. His saving grace is handball, his gift from God, and the one thing he can rely on as he is shuttled, chased, and abandoned by trusted elders, family, and friends. Even as Zev never fully escapes from the guilt of his choices, he sets course across the United States to discover where loyalty really lies and what it means.

Unique coming of age story
Revisado: 06-27-24
This story was captivating and fascinating - an education in Hasidic culture and a compelling main character. I enjoyed it immensely. The ending was too drawn out and a little anticlimactic but overall excellent.

Loved it
Revisado: 09-29-21
If you love music you'll find this novel a joyous journey. I've never read a story so rich in detail about how music impacts a character's life and loves. The split time period worked for me, keeping my interest by withholding important pieces of the love story. Natasha Solomons' themes of family, romance, English life, Jewish influences and love of music weave a colorful tapestry. I only wish she had more books!

Historia
It’s the spring of 1938 and no longer safe to be a Jew in Vienna. Nineteen-year-old Elise Landau is forced to leave her glittering life of parties and champagne to become a parlor maid in England. She arrives at Tyneford, the great house on the bay, where servants polish silver and serve drinks on the lawn. But war is coming, and the world is changing. When Kit, the son of Tyneford’s master, returns home, he and Elise strike up an unlikely friendship that will transform Tyneford - and Elise - forever. An irresistible World War II story of a forbidden romance in a great English country house.

Long but beautifully written
Revisado: 09-14-21
Wonderful story concept, beautifully drawn details of color, texture, artistry -- many lovely threads of music, Jewish experience, English manor life, family relationships, romance. I sailed along with Elise through the luscious and dramatic ups and downs of her adventure, only occasionally annoyed that the author had opportunities to go deeper into more serious territory instead of covering more superficial ground. I found the ending drawn out but overall, the author's writing carried me, keeping my interest and enjoyment alive with the vivid sights, smells and sounds of Tyneford.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Pure pleasure
Revisado: 08-03-21
For those who enjoy period classics, especially by Gaskell, this story is a pleasure. Juliet Stevenson brings it to life, her voice is perfect for the time & setting and her characters are distinct and perfect-pitched. This is a long, intricate tale that kept me company for many walks, car rides and midnight wake-ups. I may listen all over again.
