Historia
Exiled, excommunicated, and with a bounty on his head, Athelas is lying low in Seoul for exactly one reason: he has a wedding to attend. Whether or not he's welcome is another matter. Luckily for Athelas, several bodies have turned up with their soft insides gnawed out, whether by magic or Behindkind—and the latest of those bodies is at the very wedding hall he has been staking out. The Behindkind investigators suspect one of Athelas's housemates: YeoWoo, a gumiho with a thirst for revenge and an even greater appetite for soft underbelly than Athelas.

A Whisker Between
Revisado: 01-07-25
i liked the story. although the violence became tedious. i like the universe that the author has creatsd..
The reader.... he reads well but his voice is plummy and not clear enough. i had to back up and repeat sections. i also had to increase the speed to 1.05 to listen at all. But then at times the narration would speed up dramatically.
The producer did not do a good job of keeping the recording's volume level or reader speed under comtrol.

The reader detracts from the story
Revisado: 12-19-24
The previous reader was a pleasure to listen to. This reader is good in terms of grammar and vocabulary, but every character sounds like a grumpy old woman. The American characters are just embarrassing.

Wimpy, immatrure heroine
Revisado: 04-01-24
The reader is okay, but her range is not suitable for mals voices.
There were a lot of characters wandering in and out with no commentary about who they are and why they are in the story - and yet weirdly specific details about food. The dialog is stilted and unnatural.
And the "heroine" is just immature and whiny - not someone I would want to be around.
i didn't even like the cat.
i do appreciate the fact that it was included with my membership. i did like the first book in the series better.

i enjoyed this first entry to the series. The mystery was interesting, and, although I don't like bees, I found the information about them interesting. The protagonist is interesting, and I like that she admits her own flaws. i also like her npt being a Mary Sue liked by all and never being lied to or misled. i am reading the next in the series on my Kindle as it is not available on Audible.

Historia
There's more to writing a successful fantasy story than building a unique world or inventing a new type of magic. From the writing of strong, action-packed scenes to the creation of dynamic, multi-dimensional characters, fantasy author Deborah Chester guides novices and intermediate writers through a step-by-step process of story construction. Whether offering tips on how to test a plot premise or survive what she calls the dark dismal middle, Chester shares the techniques she uses in writing her own novels.

A struggle to listen to
Revisado: 06-04-23
The narrator is tolerable, but I would not seek her out.
The author has good sentence structure and vocabulary.
BUT it seems more like a string of disjointed and interminable scenes from her fiction work rather than a how-to about actually putting a book together.
I have had this book for several years, and I keep trying to wade through it because I want to believe it has good information... but the uninteresting premises of stories about one-dimensional people with utterly ridiculous five-syllable names stalls me every time.
Maybe if the reader was better. Maybe if we didnt keep veering off on tangents about characters who are as dry as burnt toast. Maybe if the toast was in smaller slices. Maybe if I could discern the organization.
I would drop another credit if they would release a version of this audio with all the examples cut out - but I suspect it would only be an hour long. That would probably be a bonus, actually, with this reader.

Historia
In this sequel to Steven Havill's Scavengers, Estelle Reyes-Guzman plunges into her new job as undersheriff of Posadas County and the action never stops. As Bill Gastner, recently retired sheriff, lurks diplomatically in the background, Estelle must deal with the disappearance of a local insurance broker who was about to be indicted for fraud. A far worse challenge comes when one of her officers, on a wild chase through town, causes the death of a young single mother in a motorcycle crash. And if that wasn't enough, now there is a dead body. It looks like suicide...or does it?

Good story ruined by a bad reader
Revisado: 09-26-22
Surely Books in Motion could have found a decent reader for the Estelle entries in this series! Their lack of diligence is insulting to both author and fans.
I have notes for Ms. Brush:
1. The main character is Hispanic - not some mobster's galpal.
2. Screeching is not a good way to distinguish between characters' voices.
3. When the author says a character chuckles or exhales or gasps, you don't need to do it in my ear.
4. Listen to some Spanish before you speak it.
Potential purchaser: the book itself is worth reading - but i suggest you buy the ebook and let your ereader's text-to-speech function read it to you.

Soon, new Sheriff Robert Torrez and Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman are knee deep in the midst of a brutal murder spree that spans both sides of the border.

The story is excellent.
Revisado: 09-25-22
The reader, however, is execrable. The character is a Hispanic woman who has spemt all but a year of her life in Mexico and New Mexico, who is actually ESL. The reader sounds like she has never even heard of Spanish. I am not a fluent Spanish-speaker - and I'm embarrassed for her. Plus, she sounds like she's chewing gum. Even her English is mangled. "Should" is pronounced "shoult." The characters' voices are just agony! Why would the nanny scream every statement? Why would a producer/director tolerate this travesty?
I'm guessing, since there are complaints dating back to the audiobook's release, that they don't care. I hope that other authors will take note and not allow Books In Motion to ruin their work.
This book should be replaced with a recording by a more suitable reader.

Just say no.
Revisado: 07-30-22
What a ridiculous setup. Southern women - trust me on this - can say no. The idea of letting all these unpleasant people move into the house and then they have to solve a murder just doesn't work.
Maybe these implausible characters can't say no, but I can.
The narrator isn't terrible, but I couldn't tell who was speaking, and the fake old lady voices.... NO.

SOOO not for me!
Revisado: 03-03-22
I listened to this book for HOURS, struggling from Minute 1. Then I checked and saw that I was only 52 minutes in. I couldn't go on. I just turned it off and navigated my traffic jam in dull but preferable silence.
It seemed like an interesting - even amusing - premise. But...
Why would 3 British LEOs land in the same retirement village in Florida? Why would a retired DCI have not the faintest understanding of crime scene procedure? In NO circumstances would this person be allowed past the tape, and even the most bumptious cop would not assume he had the right to push his way into another agency's scene. And no cop is going to let some old fool.onto a scene without even getting ID. That's Crime Scene 101.
And the characters... Moira is wishy-washy and dithering, and whatever past tragedy is hinted at (over and over) is probably the result of her inability to make a decision. Phillip is pushy, overbearing, and stupid (he does, however, win the prize for most utterly detestable non-villain in the history of fiction). Lizzie has no personality at all (and if CSIs have anything, it's personality). The fourth person, whose name I couldn't be bothered to remember, seems like a creepy space-invader and possibly a sex offender. I would not spend five minutes in the company of any of these people - much less all four. Much, much less nine hours!
Switching between four points of view is annoying - especially with four such unappealing characters. Present tense... I think some authors think this is a tool to.show their ability or to keep the reader imvolved. It's neither. It's gimmicky and irritating. Why bother with a cozy mystery - especially one with so many other disasters in progress.
I love British narrators. But this reader... not so much. She sounded as bored as I felt - but also a bit haughty. Even if the book had been tolerable, I would probably not have continued to listen, unless I was in dire need of a cure for insomnia.
And the subtitle... Is this supposed to be the grown-up version of the babysitters' club? Or did I miss the YA label?
All that having been said, if you are still interested in this audiobook, I recommend you listen to the entire sample, so you know what you're in for.
