I LOVED this book! The Briar Club is a compelling story of a group of women tenants, the family who lives in the boarding house, and the turns their lives take. Much is shared during their Thursday night meetings. A fabulous read with outstanding narration.

* I do not retell the story; you can read the description for that. No spoilers, just my opinion.
I loved these books that follow the adventures of the McNaughton brothers, Hugh and Angus, mostly at Sasekile Private Game Reserve in South Africa. Frankly, I thought the first book, told through emails, was good but sometimes tired of the brothers’ immature antics. The second book, told mostly through Angus’ journal, was even better. The brothers matured a lot, there were funny bits and also drama, and I enjoyed reading about their forays into the wild. This book, the third and last, Return to the Wild, was more of a narrative and was fantastic, at turns laugh out loud hilarious, very serious, and even exciting. The story and characters were further developed, and I grew to care more and more what happened to them. I could not put the book down and got caught up in the dramatic race to the finish to find out what would happen. The author, James Hendry, was superb as narrator, and got even better with each subsequent book. I suppose you could read any of the 3 as a stand alone, but reading them as a series really gets you invested and closer to the characters. I heartily recommend this book (and the others). I wish James Hendry would write a fourth book!

This is the 2nd book in a series of 3. The first book, A Year in the Wild, was told in email format, which was fun and interesting. It was good, but it focused mostly on the immature antics of the brothers and co-workers which I found tiresome after awhile. Back to the Bush, the 2nd book, is told from the viewpoint of Angus, the older brother, who is evolving and now more fully developed; he's becoming an interesting guy. In general, the characters are much more 3-dimensional and a lot more is told about the bush and camp itself. I was better able to get into the events and characters, and found myself often laughing out loud. I loved the scenes where Angus describes his experiences in the bush, alone or on game drives. Some of the antics in the kitchen kept me chuckling. There are still some email correspondences, which are interesting, and there is more depth to many of the relationships. Having been to South Africa, I knew some of the areas and could picture some locations and events. The story made me long to return.
The author, James Hendry, narrates all the books himself; he does the different accents and does a great job. He's fun to listen to. If you've ever been on safari, would like to go, are interested in armchair traveling there, or just want a fun, destination-based book to read, this book is for you. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading the next one.

My first Kate Quinn novel. Well written, fascinating plot with multi-dimensional, interesting characters, based on true events. A bit of a slow start at the very beginning, but, once it took off, it was filled with gripping events and plot twists. Excellent narration. Couldn’t put it down.

Having read other books by this author, I was looking forward to this one, but was supremely disappointed. I hate to leave a bad review, but there is almost nothing I liked about this book. Disclaimer: I did not finish; I finally gave up after the halfway point. I simply could not read anymore. The story is slight, the characters are flat, simple and most are mean spirited, and it just drags on and on. In many ways, it reminds me of a 50s western TV show that was fine for the time, but doesn’t work in today’s world. Life is too short, and there are too many good books to finish this one.

Great short read. Charming and entertaining with interesting characters and a touch of mystery. So French! I enjoyed the narration. My only criticism is that I would have liked a bit more of a pause between chapters.

Ordinary Grace is a beautifully told story about a minister and his family living a seemingly idyllic life, until one summer when things start to go wrong, and the story becomes a mystery. The story shines, I believe, through its wonderfully developed, relatable characters, and is narrated by the minister’s 13-year-old son, Frank. I believe the story is also made all the better as an audiobook, masterfully narrated by Rich Orlo, who does a brilliant job with the voices. My only criticism of the story is that, for me, the resolution was so obvious early on. The author carefully laid out the clues, there weren’t a lot of options, and I was sorry to have figured it out fairly early on (no spoilers; I hate when people give away the plot). That said, I still love the book and really enjoyed listening. Don’t miss the interview with the author at the conclusion of the book.
I looked for other books by Krueger, but did not want to start with a series. There is another novel that he wrote in 2019 (sorry, I forgot the title) and it was free to download with my subscription.

I don’t give many story details in my reviews so as not to ruin it for the reader. I dislike it when people give away the story.
The novel, Honor, is beautifully written with interesting characters, though there were times I wanted to shake Smita for her behavior. The story was rich with culture, exposing both the beauty and the ugliness of India, focusing on some of the old customs, many of which are still in existence, the clash between religious groups and the often twisted obsession with their interpretation of honor. It also shows the lack of regard for the poor and the unfortunate, even children. Often difficult to read, it was still definitely worth doing so. Gripping, moving, heartbreaking and very powerful, I found it hard to put down. Some of the outcomes were predictable, but it’s a wild ride throughout. The narration was excellent. I really loved this book and feel changed after reading it. I plan to read more of Umrigar’s work.

Difficult emotionally, but fascinating. This book and Ms. Redgrave’s narration are brilliant and devastating. Unimaginable but real. I am not sure how Ms. Didion was able to endure and write so poignantly about her year.

I found the story to be historically interesting but rather predictable. Mirielle, the main character is so self-absorbed. Rather than feel sorry for her, I just found her annoying with her reactive childish behavior, making me want to quit reading on several occasions. The narrator does a good job with the voices, but her brusqueness with Mirielle made me like her even less. The characters are somewhat flat and stereotypical, and and the writing somewhat melodramatic. Maybe others with different reading tastes will like it better.
