Historia
On a cold Saturday afternoon in 1975, two men (who had known each other for eight years before they’d ever exchanged a word) met for lunch in a Chicago pub. Gene Siskel was the film critic for the Chicago Tribune. Roger Ebert had recently won the Pulitzer Prize—the first ever awarded to a film critic—for his work at the Chicago Sun-Times. To say they despised each other was an understatement.

A Must Read for Fans of Siskel and Ebert
Revisado: 12-28-23
I love movies, but I am not into celebrities. When a celebrity dies, I feel momentarily sad, but I move on. But when Roger Ebert died, I felt like I had lost a trusted friend. To this day, I miss reading his work. Needless to say, I thought I'd heard all the behind the scenes stories before of the making of Siskel and Ebert, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was unfamiliar with perhaps 80 percent of the content of this book. If you are a fan of either of these men, or their show, you definitely need to read this book. Also good narration by the author.

Historia
On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, 20-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins - some collected 150 years earlier.

Amazing Narration
Revisado: 04-14-23
The story was intriguing from start to finish. The main story is certainly compelling, but many of the side stories, like the stories early on about a naturalist who was a contemporary of Darwin who lost in a ship fire that left him stranded at sea thousands of animal skins and live animals that he'd spent years gathering on expeditions around the world. The main story though takes a number of unexpected turns that makes for entertaining listening.
The star though of this production is MaCleod Andrews whose narration is incredible. He doesn't overdo the drama. It is just the right amount and it's done in such a relaxed manner. One of the best narration jobs I have heard in quite some time.

Historia
The Education Myth questions the idea that education represents the best, if not the only, way for Americans to access economic opportunity. As Jon Shelton shows, linking education to economic well-being was not politically inevitable. In the 18th and 19th centuries, for instance, public education was championed as a way to help citizens learn how to participate in a democracy. By the 1930s, public education, along with union rights and social security, formed an important component of a broad-based fight for social democracy.

I learned a lot about the topic. Written in clear prose that is accessible to all, the book details how the efforts of our politicians on both sides of the aisle have prioritized the attainment of a college degree over all other means of creating a solid middle class. The book is not anti-education, but it makes a strong argument for enhancing other parts of the social safety net. Engaging narration throughout.

Historia
>When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Historia
Becoming a teen mom at 16 was not what I expected, but then again, neither was being a single parent. Still, I wouldn't change my past because that boy is my world. Hockey is the only thing my son seems to care about, so I work two jobs to make sure he can play. I'd do anything to make sure he doesn't suffer because of the bad decisions his father made. When he won a whole summer of hockey training, I knew in my heart he was going to have an amazing time.

Great Escape
Revisado: 06-26-20
This audiobook is the reason we read Romance. It is a wonderful escape. A fantasy come true. Who wouldn't dream of having some rich professional hockey player come sweep you off your feet and take care of you and your boy. If you are looking to escape your own life for a few hours and imagine a more just world where good things happen to good people, then you can't do much better than this.
Good narration by Mia Madison and Lance Adams.

Inspiring Story
Revisado: 06-26-20
Everyone needs to read a book like this once in a while. It is a reminder that we as humans are capable of being good to one another. From the first page, you cant help but care for the boy featured in the story. Unfortunately there really are kids who live like this... their parents are no longer capable of caring for them, they don't have enough to eat and they are forced to beg on the street. it is a reminder that the most common form of child abuse is neglect and our instincts tell us to help these kids out, but how can we? This author made a decision to help one kid and what a difference it made. It reminds me of the story of the kid who sees a beach full of starfish dieing in the sun, needing water and he throws one back in the water. and his sister says Why bother? What difference can it make to throw one back? And he says, well, it made a difference to that one.

Historia
In Secondhand, Adam Minter delves into the vast, multibillion-dollar industry that resells used stuff around the world. He follows the trail of unwanted objects from the closets, garages, and storage units of Middle America to epic used-goods markets in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Ghana, India, Malaysia, and beyond. Secondhand takes us through the often painful and heartbreaking process of cleaning out a lifetime’s worth of possessions and shows that used stuff still has a place in a world that values the new and shiny.

This is filled with lots of cool tidbits about what happens to your stuff when you're done with it. Not every chapter has a strong narrative drive, but enough do to make it worth the time, and the narrator has a smooth easy going style.

Historia
Rose Howard has OCD, Asperger's syndrome, and an obsession with homonyms (even her name is a homonym). She gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein), which, according to Rose's rules of homonyms, is very special. Rain was a lost dog Rose's father brought home. Rose and Rain are practically inseparable. And they are often home alone, as Rose's father spends most evenings at a bar, and doesn't have much patience for his special-needs daughter.

Good, but a little predictable
Revisado: 07-30-19
This is a decent book with a good lesson for kids about accepting differences. It can also help kids to learn more about autism. The only issue I had with it is that the main character feels more like a manifestation of every trait associated with autism than an actual person. The narration was a little forced in this regard as well. I doubt most readers will be as bothered by this as I was though.
