Why is it that the default response is to lie?

First off, I could listen to Amanda Ronconi read a phone book and be entertained. Getting that out of the way and that I am not a woman, so maybe this makes more sense to women, but why in any given situation of even the slightest bit of difficulty is the main character's default response to lie? Half the book seems to be her lying, feeling guilty about lying, and additional lying to cover the first lies. Granted, I guess it would only be one book if the MC just told the truth, but its kind of cringe inducing when it happens over and over.

The "Decision made for no other reason than plot advancement" is strong with this one. The revile of information to the reader/MC is always right at the moment its needed for plot. The world building is weak, and makes little sense from even a pure resource point of view, although the author tries to justify it "logically", he would have done better just saying it was alien. Lets have a fleet spend weeks recruiting from a backwards world, just to have one crew to pilot one 1000 year-old vessel that is more trouble to field than its worth to the battle. Also, after said aliens have tortured and murdered humans by the hundreds, lets also have said crew take the aliens word for it that they are the good guys. None of it made any sense. You could explain away the aliens, but the humans responses could have only made sense in the author's mind. There were several places where the cringe was so heavy I just had to fast-forward.

If I have one gripe, its clear that the author never read Atlas Shrugged, the idea that it would be the book a Bancroft would carry is about as believable as a slave trader having a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Digby's philosophy on life is a lot closer to Ragnar and Galt's than it is to Taggart or Mouch's. I will admit laughing at the author's representation of union, its was the perfect allegory even down to arguing for more benefits while its own existence in was in danger, then only doing the bare minimum to survive.

I enjoyed the world building and story. The MC was a little slow on the up take of the world he found himself in, but other than that, the story fit together very well. There was little in the way of stupid decisions to force the story along, and both the MC and the antagonists all made determinations that were for the most part logical and reasoned. The story suffers a bit from a Scooby-Doo got ya moment in the end, but was still a solid attempt and I look forward to reading the next installment.

At this point, we know the main characters, we know the dynamics, yes, new challenges are appearing, but the characters are interacting and solving them. If you have enjoyed the first six books as much as I have, this story was basically, slightly guilt-inducing comfort food.

Having been inundated with books where nominally intelligent protagonists who make completely unexplainable and illogical decisions when the plot demands it, this story was a breath of fresh air. The protagonist, while making many mistakes, never makes them in such a fashion as to appear "random stupid decision to advance plot", that is to say, everything done is thought out, and when mistakes occur, they are analyzed, and corrected for rationally. Likewise, the antagonists are shown as rational beings, who while making mistakes themselves, are never shown to be either chaotic evil, nor stupid.

First off, I tend to like sappy romance stories with a supernatural/sci-fi twist. But the decisions of the main characters and incongruity in the world building aspects of this set of stories is just a level of stupid that shouldn't exist, and routinely pulled me out of the story for minutes at time while I just contemplated if the book editor was a 5 year old with ADHD.

The main character acts like she was written by a bipolar teenage girl. Randomly run out of restaurant, lie to boy friend, lie to cops, lie to friends, lie to ghosts, compound stupid mistakes for plot, ignore obvious clues, walk alone in New Orleans after mid night, and break into a crime scene, sure, why not. On the plus side, Amanda Ronconi is as great as ever, just wish she had better material to work with.

Overall, not the worst book I ever listened to, but no where near the best. I thought the plot was good, and the magic mixed with sci-fi elements was good. Other than that, the character development/interaction/dialogue was bad. The narration was iffy. Added up, I don't want to flame this book, but I am also not going any farther in the series.

I enjoyed it OK. BUT I will say what made the audio book for me at the end there were the out takes and I was laughing hard by the end of those.
