Historia
In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how geography, combined with demography and energy independence, will pave the way for one of the great turning points in history, and one in which America reasserts its global dominance. No other country has a greater network of internal waterways, a greater command of deepwater navigation, or a firmer hold on industrialization technologies than America.

Second time through this book. First time last year I was looking for outside confirmation of his thesis. Hard to find, but Russia is in Ukrain. Peter called that back in 2014. Check. China’s population is in serious decline, China recently adjusted its population numbers down, Check. Interesting book with a unique perspective on us humans. Read (listen) and see.

Historia
The second book in the NYT best-selling Expanse series, Caliban's War shows a solar system on the brink of war, and the only hope of peace rests on James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante's shoulders. We are not alone. On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes.

Solid story

Well written and with the possible mixing of one or two characters voices, very well read. Enjoyed it immensely but will have to slow down prior to Season 4 in December. 😥

Historia
From one of our finest military historians comes a monumental work that shows us at once the truly global reach of World War II and its deeply personal consequences. Remarkably informed and wide-ranging, Inferno is both elegantly written and cogently argued. Above all, it is a new and essential understanding of one of the greatest and bloodiest events of the 20th century.

Love Ralph Cosham
Revisado: 01-24-19
The book is an outstanding example of research, scholarship and storytelling. To that I would add narration. For me Ralph really makes the book memorable.
The details are legion and sources near endless and all contribute poignant pieces to the effort. Max Hastings is one of the premier historians of this period. Able to move clearly and smoothly between the micro and tactical to the strategic and macro. Between the military and the political effortlessly.
Quite the catalog of mans inhumanity and a must for anyone interested in a nuanced account of what happened between 1939 to 1945 and the postwar era.

Historia
Ghost Empire is a rare treasure - an utterly captivating blend of the historical and the contemporary, realised by a master storyteller. In 2014, Richard Fidler and his son Joe made a journey to Istanbul. Fired by Richard's passion for the rich history of the dazzling Byzantine Empire - centred around the legendary Constantinople - we are swept into some of the most extraordinary tales in history. The clash of civilisations, the fall of empires, the rise of Christianity, revenge, lust, murder.

Unraveled byzantine history
Revisado: 10-05-17
Very much enjoyed the exploration of an old city. The movement between the contemporary and the past was presented in a way that pulls you in. I have wanted to do something similar but Erdogan and the occasional crack downs give me pause. As does all the rest of the regional chaos. The trip to Roman ruins is on the list and this book upped the desire factor.

Historia
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

Brilliant take on the "American Experience"
Revisado: 02-14-17
Would you listen to The Half Has Never Been Told again? Why?
I do plan on listening many more times. I don't know offhand what the percent of Americans read a book regularly, though I think it is low. Again I don't know how many Americans know their own history, I think that is low as well. Which is too bad. This is the best book I have read on American History, pretty much since I started reading. The scale, detail and scope of the history is engrossing. The detail and documentation, revelatory. If you have any desire to understand who we are as a country and a people, this book will fill out many of those places where light never penetrated.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Not a book of characters hence no favorites.
Have you listened to any of Ron Butler’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was my first, he did it justice and his narrating may tip the scale for my next Audible.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The book is well paced, planned and executed you still need some time. Time to digest what one has heard and one sitting would be difficult.
Any additional comments?
A gateway drug to knowledge.

I hope this is not the nadir of American ability, imagination, talent and drive. But if it is, what a way to go out. Great people doing great things and succeeding for all the world to see and feel. Hat's off to Mr Chaikin for his effort and storytelling ability. And thanks also to Mr Pinchot for his fine work.
