Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Revisado: 09-01-24
Butcher really has come a long way from the first Dresden novels. His greatest strength has always been his fun and interesting characters. This novel showcases that strength.

Historia
A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.

Great But...
Revisado: 07-27-24
I loved the first half maybe more but the gathering up and resolution was just okay. It all fits and works but the build up is insanely good and interesting the fallow through suffers from it's own expectations. Still very much recommend.

Solid, good even. Punished by too much hype
Revisado: 04-10-24
I liked the book. I liked the characters. I just wish it was more. Everything felt like not enough. The magic was interesting but was never delved into to wow me. The gangster life style was good but was not fleshed out enough. The political maneuvering, the spiritual/cultural underpinnings, the history, and the connection to real history were all great ideas but never delved into enough. Instead of doing anything great this book did everything well. I enjoyed the listen but the third act made me realize how much more I wanted and the end left me debating if I wanted to bother with the rest of the series.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great Book Glad I Finally Finished It
Revisado: 10-31-23
my only complaint is that it feels long. This is because of the sheer number of times we are led to the revealing of information only to just cut to a different time/place/person. A fine tactic to pull us along but it's done so often that I grew tired and put the book down unfinished many times. I am so glad I started it again though. The good thing about having so much unresolvable for so long is that once it finally starts coming together the end is an exciting ride. I just wish there were better signposts in the middle of the book than just a long trail of breadcrumbs and switchbacks.

Very Interesting World But..
Revisado: 08-21-23
I really loved the world and the characters were intriguing at first, but nothing interesting happened. I never felt any tension. What was available for characters to win or lose never had gravity. The heroes were never challenged. They just succeed at whatever they try. Only twice do events have direct negative impacts to them, one time they are just saved by someone else with no loss the other is just shrugged at and referenced as a logistical inconvenience.
Still, I did very much love the world and style of writing is of quality. I think this just may not be my style of story; being neither in-the-trenches nor high level ideas.

Best Story Yet
Revisado: 08-16-23
my only complaint about the Murderbot Diaries has been their length to cost ratio.
To help with that I gobble them up whenever they are on sale.
This broke that one problem. It was a longer story but did not lose the straight forward storytelling that has made the series so good.

It has been 40 years since the publication of this classic science-fiction novel that changed the way we look at the stars and ourselves. Extremely Good
Revisado: 06-05-23
I really wish Audible was on a 20 point scale this is really a 4.5 performance and. 4.75 story.
I highly recommend it to any fan of the film, though I do think the film is better for the very reasons Clark states in this introduction. I also recommend it to all fans of hard science fiction. Though if that is you then I am sure you don't need my encouragement to read this.

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

Amazing
Revisado: 03-08-23
My only complaint is that I missed the cast performance from Hyperion. The narrator still is five stars good.
combined with Hyperion as one story it is easily the greatest work of science fiction in any medium I have had the pleasure to enjoy.
