weird mix of genres
Revisado: 09-06-22
the cover screams YA romance but the first chapter ends in the discovery of a dead body. hm. most of the book reads like a YA romance with mentions of this murder sprinkled in. it was rather odd. felt like the author tried to mash two half-baked book ideas into one book. You're reading it thinking this book seems written for middle schoolers and then all of a sudden they're drinking underage with such regularity that the main character has a signature shot preference?? the book seemed all over the place. the performance was good. definitely a one and done book, not something you'd come back to.

Historia
On her 18th birthday, Cleo receives a mysterious invitation to a scavenger hunt. She's sure her best friend, Hope, or her brother, Connor, is behind it, but no one confesses. And as Cleo and Hope embark on the hunt, the seemingly random locations and clues begin to feel familiar. In fact, all of the clues seem to be about Cleo's dead boyfriend, Declan, who drowned on a group rafting trip exactly a year ago: a bracelet she bought him, a song he loved, a photo of the rafting group, taken just before Declan drowned.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

a funny, delightful historical fiction
Revisado: 06-19-22
Elizabeth Zott is a delightful mix of Amelia Bedelia, Phryne Fischer, Amy Farrah Fowler, and Alton Brown. A feminist anthem that reminds modern women how much strife the women before us went through, fighting tooth and nail for every bit of respect as humans. This book is a love story, a mystery, a tale of found family, historic fiction, a cooking manual and a chemistry class all in one fascinating book that keeps you hanging onto every word and laughing along the way. Every second was necessary and entertaining, and worth every penny.

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

needs trigger warnings
Revisado: 06-15-22
trigger warning: self-harm described twice in detail as a coping mechanism. eating disorder alluded to. pregnancy termination. suicide and attempts. drug use.
otherwise, slow start. in reality this mystery could have started at least an hour in. there's extremely graphic sex scenes that don't lend themselves to the plot or further characters. overall the mystery was good but I found the ending rather unsatisfactory. there were still unanswered questions and it didn't feel like true justice was served.
the performance was great though, very talented voice actors.

Revisado: 06-06-22
this was a great book that kept you on edge til the last second. the ending was rooted in reality and was very satisfying, though I wouldn't have minded a couple extra pages. the performance was good and the narrator was excellent at distinguishing between voices.

a departure from his other books but a wonderful 1
Revisado: 04-17-22
if you are a fan of John Green's other books, this is a great read/listen. As a fan myself, this book offered some context and behind-the-scenes information that left me wanting to reread some of his books. it's hard to find the words to describe the sort of impact this book can have but I guess I'll sum it up like this: I'm not a scholarly person but when I saw the study guide for this book I immediately purchased it. there are a lot of big ideas and themes that I'm eager to dive deeper into. John Green has lived a fascinating life that the reader is privileged to learn more about in this quasi-autobiography. the rate/review format of this book is extremely entertaining and his insights into pandemic life, Canadian Geese, and the Indy 500 are nothing short of thought-provoking. this is the kind of book you'll want to read with someone else so you can discuss it. if you enjoy this book, listen to his podcast Dear Hank and John, or as I prefer to think of it, Dear John and Hank.

stupendous!
Revisado: 04-17-22
fabulous, fantastic, amazing, wonderful. all the superlatives!! it's been a very long time since I've loved a book this much. it is very unexpected from the beginning. broadly speaking this story has been written before, but the author has gone so much deeper and written it in a completely different way to the point where I felt things I'd never felt from books before! I will probably by the print version of this book because I loved it so much. the only downfall of the performance is that the male parts are much quieter than the female parts so you'll have to keep close tovthe volume switch when you listen. otherwise, it is so perfect I can't bring myself to listen to the prequel or sequel because I'm afraid it will ruin the absolutely perfect story in this book!
spoiler:
it was so refreshing to read a book with a Deaf character that was clearly written by someone who has met a Deaf person. often they are poorly written as people to be pitied, who are missing great parts of themselves and aren't completely whole until they are loved by a hearing person or given the "gift" of hearing, but the author obviously has some experience that makes these characters excellently written.

weird
Revisado: 04-17-22
as a fan of true crime, I thought this book would be right up my alley. seeing so many voice actors featured, I figured this book would be told from many different viewpoints but it is not. it is all told through the emotionally stunted narrator of a newly five year old boy. be prepared for graphic descriptions of breast feeding because i cannot get them out of my head in the worst way possible. overall i think this story would be mucn more interesting if it included the mother's perspective. I really struggled to get through this book, to the point where I could only tolerate about 15 minutes at a time. I made it halfway through and I'm stalled there. it's an interesting story idea but frustrating to only have the one perspective from such a limited view.
