Historia
Sixteen-year-old Jake Livingston sees dead people everywhere. But he can't decide what's worse: being a medium forced to watch the dead play out their last moments on a loop or being at the mercy of racist teachers as one of the few Black students at St. Clair Prep. Both are a living nightmare he wishes he could wake up from. But things at St. Clair start looking up with the arrival of another Black student - the handsome Allister - and for the first time, romance is on the horizon for Jake. Unfortunately, life as a medium is getting worse.

One Of The Best Books Of All Time
Revisado: 11-01-24
I loved the introduction to this story, I felt seen and heard in every page. George M. Johnson's voice is so clear, compassionate and genuine throughout this whole book. In only 2 hours I felt everything just by listening to this story, I found myself being gently educated and guided through a history I have yearned to learn more about. After reading Jay's review (I highly reccomend checking it out) I rushed to Audible to get this book and listen today. I adored the chapter "secret not secret" It felt like finding a letter in a library or at a crowded party. Each chapter a mix of discussions of the lives of some of the most iconic authors of color who were part of the LGBTQIA+ community. While reading this book I realized how cheated i was in public schools and even while in college (I'm currently still studying.) I never got to learn in depth about these amazing people, almost like a secret history of lives. It's never too late to learn, but i feel grateful to have this book.

Wow This Was Intese & Darkly Funny
Revisado: 07-02-24
This book caught my attention from chapter 1 and never let me go. It felt like analyzed people's relationships with social media and true crime, while also telling a story I have always from a distance wondered. Why do some people fall for killer's? As a criminal justice student the psychology of it was always fascinating, but this book analyzes it from the POV of a curious and complex female main character who my heart broke for many times. She is seeking validation and love outwardly which leads to this intense and twisty story. I listened to this book as an audiobook and the narrator, Andi Arndt really pulled me into the story as she sounded like someone I knew. The chapters set during the trial were so fast paced and linked to the mind of our FMC, I felt her obsession grow and began to feel she was unreliable at times. I felt like I was sitting beside the main character as she fell deeper into the dark abyss that was William and the case. I also liked how the author discusses multiple times the constant fear of being a woman and how violence impacts the way women live, interact, and process any actions of the people around them. This fear I've found is universal both on and off the page.

Sade's story in this mysterious story of loss, investigation, self discovery and grief was immersive and dark. I listened to this book and the narrator, Julia Whealan, had the most beautiful accent (brittish) and made me feel like I was in the story. As Sade and Baz investigated the missing person at the heart of this story and Sade experiences flash backs from a mysterious night someone died I found myself wanting answers after every chapter. The story was twisty and left me feeling like I was in a maze unsure of where I'd find myself in the end. Also the romantic tension between Sade and her love interest made me smile, despite all the darkness in the plot.

The real-life story of a relationship in the author's past told in verse and short prose pieces. Relatable and honest, with Tank's signature mix of whimsy and realness, Vulnerable AF is about the difference between love and infatuation, the danger and confusion of losing yourself in the idea of someone else, and coming out on the other side of heartbreak with your sense of self-worth—and your sense of humor—stronger for it.

best poetry I've heard all year 👏🏽🩷
Revisado: 04-13-24
The poem about the sun was my favorite!!! Between every beautiful poem has piano interludes between them and there's so much emotion in everything. It felt like a friend talking to you, reading you poetry from their journal in their room.
Wow I mainly knew Tank from their musical background and their PBS youtube videos, but now I can't wait for more of her poetry books (hopefully we get more in the future.) Ball also included pictures in their poetry collection that are included if you check out their physical book or even the audible version (which the author reads and performs in a magical fashion.) Can't believe this book is free on Audible ~ listen to it as soon as you can!

Wow Amazing & Short - Packs A Punch
Revisado: 04-12-24
This book feels like the movies, Don't Worry Darling and the Stepford Wives with a leading character who's inner voice feels poetic, haunting, and cold.
Sophia's mind and the story was hypnotic and intricate in this short story. This story was so haunting as all the men mentioned were treating women like objects and less like people. All the qoutes I provided actually made my skin crawl due to the tone of the whole story.
This story discusses safety, privelege, power, and reminded me a lot of controlling societies.
There's a scene when someone asks women in a room "if they are happy," and one women digs her nails into a couch and says yes. And the manner that Sophia's understanding of love and the way her findings leave her world crumbling.
The audiobook was only 2 hours and I felt like I was holding a friend's hand while running in the dark. I had no idea where the story was going and that felt freeing and terrifying. The descriptions of the house and the way Sophia is treated like a child yet expected to be the perfect wife was real for many women in history. Being expected to be perfect yet youthful forever, clean yet understanding their husband's every need. The other women were named after animals Mrs.Lion... I wondered more about the metaphors of it all.
The dark themes are threaded through this book, between each chapter rules are listed. Rules about the neighborhood, and the things Sophia finds in her own home scare me. I began to fear her husband despite him not being present most of the book. But this story will stay with me.
