Disappointing
Revisado: 02-28-25
I have listened to several of Riley’s books read by this narrator and enjoyed them. This one not at all and got through it only when I decided to increase the speed to 1.5 to get to the end as quickly as possible. It all seemed like a story that went on and in to fill the pages, was trite and m extremely predictable. I paid for it, so I finished it, but if a library audio, I would have returned it.

Historia
When Aurelie Harcourt's father dies in debtor's prison, he leaves her just two things: his wealthy family, whom she has never met, and his famous pen name, Nathaniel Droll. Her new family greets her with apathy and even resentment. Only the quiet houseguest, Silas Rotherham, welcomes her company. When Aurelie decides to complete her father's unfinished serial novel, she must keep her identity as Nathaniel Droll hidden while searching for the truth about her mother's disappearance - and perhaps even her father's death.

Torturous
Revisado: 03-22-24
I am not sure which I disliked more, the nasal British accent of the reader, the rather foolish and exceedingly righteous “heroine “, or the very contrived plot.
I will keep track of both author a reader in order to avoid them.

After her elder brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning - known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian. Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear.

A Disappointment
Revisado: 01-10-24
While not every author draws you back for a second read, I do try to get through a book once selected no matter how plodding….especially if I’ve paid for it.
This book was unbelievable in so many ways, especially the female lead who evidenced more hair that wit.” The last hour + was particularly excruciating in terms of choices, actions and dialogue.
The reader certainly didn’t improve things. I’ll avoid both author and reader in the future.

Really too contrived with unrealistic characters and situations.
Continued listening because it was adequate background for accomplishing household chores. I won’t be use my credits to find out about the remaining 3 sisters though.

Historia
Thirty-year-old widow Louisa Middlehope is determined to escape from her late husband’s family and live life for herself for the first time. But the house she has leased has been empty for a quarter of a century and who knows what secrets it holds?

Disappointing?
Revisado: 10-23-23
I “liked” the protagonists and there were some good moments, but while the story held some interest, many aspects of the dialogue and plot seemed contrived and unbelievable. I found the reader more authentic at 1.2.

Historia
Twenty-six-year-old Beatrice Hyde-Clare is far too shy to investigate the suspicious death of a fellow guest in the Lake District. A spinster who lives on the sufferance of her relatives, she would certainly not presume to search the rooms of her host's son and his friend looking for evidence. Reared in the twin virtues of deference and docility, she would absolutely never think to question the imperious Duke of Kesgrave about anything, let alone how he chose to represent the incident to the local constable. And yet that's exactly what she does.

Perhaps the narrative would have been more palatable with a better reader. Who mispronounces Jacobean? First I tried increasing the speed because I like to finish what I start, but after 1 1/2 hours, I just skipped to the last 5 minutes.

Historia
Most debutantes dream of finding husbands. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she's ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

Another winner
Revisado: 04-03-21
The trouble with my listening to a number of these romances in a row is that a few years later I often forget the title and the characters and plot become a bit fuzzy. As I began this story, aspects of it seemed a bit familiar, but by the time I was certain I had listened to it before, I was hooked again. Maybe I should have returned it, but the pairing of Kleypas and Whalen was again worth it.

Historia
Although beautiful young widow Phoebe, Lady Clare, has never met West Ravenel, she knows one thing for certain: He’s a mean, rotten bully. Back in boarding school, he made her late husband’s life a misery, and she’ll never forgive him for it. But when Phoebe attends a family wedding, she encounters a dashing and impossibly charming stranger who sends a fire-and-ice jolt of attraction through her. And then he introduces himself...as none other than West Ravenel.

Great Listen
Revisado: 04-01-21
Kleypas and Wells, again a great pairing! Love romances, put prefer those that don’t follow a tortuous/trope path. Like Marrying Winterbourne, this is such a novel. Sympathetic characters, in the realm of believable, who are also articulate are to be appreciated in this genre. Perhaps once more interested in the steamy bits, I now want a well designed plot that of course leads to a happy conclusion, but a realistic one, and good writing. And to have a narrator whose voice is engaging as she performs all characters is a treat.
Well written, well performed, well done!

Historia
Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

I was drawn to this book because I particularly enjoy listening to Mary Jane Wells narrate a story and she didn’t disappoint. The story was something different and engaging and I’ll look for another pairing of Wells and Dare.

Historia
Michael McCann has a gentle way with women, and Timona Calverson is no exception, despite her ragged clothes. Though Timona may be no more than a mysterious woman, Michael is determined to keep her from harm, if only for one night. Timona can't bring herself to tell him who she really is - or that her rich family will pay handsomely for her return. She knows very little about Michael McCann, except that he is good enough to give his last cup of tea to a stranger, and compassionate enough to own the ugliest dog on earth.

Different
Revisado: 03-16-21
Worth the listen as it is (as of the moment) part of Audible’s free offerings. The main characters are sympathetic, but they do seem an odd match with their “connection” tenuous. The story does seem to end abruptly with almost everything tied up simply and neatly. I was never clear what the brother’s part was exactly.
I had trouble with the narrator’s pace until I increased her speed to 1.2x. Her Irish accent was well enough, but her mispronunciations of several English words was surprising when she had made such an effort to differentiate characters voices.
