Historia
Cassie Andrews works in a New York City bookshop, shelving books, making coffee for customers, and living an unassuming, ordinary life. Until the day one of her favorite customers—a lonely yet charming old man—dies right in front of her. Cassie is devastated. She always loved his stories, and now she has nothing to remember him by. Nothing but the last book he was reading. But this is no ordinary book… It is the Book of Doors. Inscribed with enigmatic words and mysterious drawings, it promises Cassie that any door is every door. You just need to know how to open them.

Good writing but a little too drawn out
Revisado: 12-21-24
The writing and storyline are great. In several areas it went on too long and made a few too many detours, could have been more impactful if it was a bit shorter.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Struggling to stick with it
Revisado: 08-20-24
Very interested in the content but the constant swearing and horrible audio recording is making it impossible to stick with for more than a few minutes at a time. Frustrating because she clearly has valuable insight to share and teach.

Great book
Revisado: 06-22-24
I really enjoy this authors style and prose. Looking forward to the next book. It’s enjoyable to have stories that aren’t all based on tense drama and suspense, but allow the reader to journey along the life of a great personality.

One of the best books I’ve encountered in quite a while. The writing is superb, I struggled to put it down and was up late more than one night unable to stop. I wish I could start over again and discover it anew.

Heartbreaking
Revisado: 04-27-24
The writing is superb, the story is heartbreaking and often hard to listen to. It’s so unbelievable that this is how we have and in some cases continue to treat human beings. It’s captivating and always suspenseful, a great book. If only it weren’t likely so true.

Historia
The one thing you can depend on in Cold Sassy, Georgia, is that word gets around fast. If the preacher's wife's petticoat shows, the ladies will make the talk last a week. But on July 5, 1906, things take a scandalous turn. That is the day E. Rucker Blakeslee, proprietor of the general store and barely three weeks a widower, elopes with Miss Love Simpson, a woman half his age and, worse yet, a Yankee!

Wonderful writing

The culture of the time is heartbreaking to hear about. Perhaps the culture of all times is. The writing throughout is spectacular, and the characters, especially the main character are well developed and believable. Great narration. I only wish there was a sequel.

Masterful writing, incomplete story
Revisado: 01-14-24
Amor Towles is an incredible writer, A gentleman in Moscow is one of my favorite books in recent memory. His writing and ability to develop characters is still outstanding in this book, but the story was lacking, and for how many characters he put into play on their own journeys, every one of them but one was left abruptly ended in the middle of their journey. I thought when the book ended that it was a mistake on the download or something. Even what seemed the primary plot, the trip west was left unanswered. I suppose that perhaps a sequel is planned in order to finish all of the stories? Felt disappointed at the end and unfulfilled, but I will continue purchasing Towles books as the writing is incredible.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Absolutely epic
Revisado: 05-30-23
One of those books that will sticl with you and you'll look back at it wondering how someone could possibly write so convincingly and naturally. It's a masterpiece, and the narration is some of the best I've ever encountered. As long as it was I wish it had been twice as long. This has got to be one of the greatest writers of all time, and I'm excited to explore more of her work.

Historia
When Humphrey Van Weyden finds himself struggling in the freezing waters of San Francisco Bay, he thinks the worst that can happen to him is drowning. After he is rescued by the Ghost and its captain, Wolf Larson, Humphrey discovers that there are fates far worse than death. On Larsen's hell-ship, the dilettante hero is forced to slave as cabin boy and humble seaman. And over the seven months' voyage to the sealing grounds off Siberia, he engages in an epic duel with his ruthlessly Nietzschean skipper.

Historia
The final novel from a great American storyteller. Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig's beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an 11-year-old's imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for "female trouble" in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

A tremendous book for all
Revisado: 06-29-21
Absolutely loved this book, and David Baker is one of my all time favorite narrators. Reminded me some of his reading of Dandelion Wine, which is another book I'll come back to again and again. This may not quite be at the level of that classic, but I wish it had been 3 times longer so that I'd still be enjoying it now instead of reviewing it.
