Historia
Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before - the unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Much Improved
Revisado: 11-27-19
The audiobook of the first Bosch-Ballard team-up (Dark Sacred Night), in my view, made a mistake by having Mr. Welliver and Ms. Lakin take turns reading entire sections written from Bosch and Ballard’s perspective. It was fine, but weird to hear each reading the “other” character’s words. In this book, the conversations between Bosch and Ballard are just that, conversations, with the two narrators speaking “their” character’s words. I liked that MUCH better.
The story is pretty typical Connelly, which means interesting and absorbing. This book was a little light on Bosch for my taste, but I enjoyed getting to know Ballard a bit better. Well done.

Historia
Renée Ballard is working the night beat again and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out but then checks into the case herself, and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger. Bosch is investigating the death of 15-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch.

Narration challenge
Revisado: 08-07-19
I’ll start at the end...In the epilogue, the two narrators (Christine Lakin and Titus Welliver) read the text as a conversation (her doing Ballard, him Bosch). Doing it that way, to me, really worked. The rest of the book, with the two readers alternating sections and doing all voices, would have worked if it was only one of them throughout the book, but the alternating was distracting to me. Minor quibble really. This is a very good book, and I enjoy both main characters.

Historia
The United States Football League was the last football league to not merely challenge the mighty NFL but also to cause it to collectively shudder. It spanned three seasons, featured as many as 18 teams, secured multiple television deals, drew millions of fans, and launched the careers of legends - but then it died beneath the weight of a particularly egotistical and bombastic owner, a New York businessman named Donald Trump. Jeff Pearlman draws on more than 400 interviews to unearth all the salty, untold stories of one of the craziest sports entities to have ever captivated America.

Great Story, Poor Narration
Revisado: 10-28-18
This is a very interesting history of the fascinating but ultimately doomed United States Football League. Jeff Pearlman captures so many excellent stories, and definitely adds new information to the canon beyond that found in previous books on the league and the ESPN 30 for 30 video. The narration, though, is really distracting due to numerous pronunciation errors (Mike "RO-zher" rather than "ro-ZEER", coach Jack "PAR-dee" rather than "par-DEE", QB Bobby "HEE-bert" rather then "AY-bair" etc, etc, etc). And, if you are reading a sports book, you should know that when you see a team's record written as 8-10, that is read "8 and 10" rather than "8 to 10." I know, little things, but they are distracting and detract from an excellent story.
