Historia
A Rome of One’s Own is a retelling of the history of Rome with the Important Things, but also all the things Roman history writers relegate to the background—or designate as domestic, feminine, or worthless. This is a history of individuals, twenty-one women who span the length of its territory and its centuries, who caused outrage, led armies in rebellion, wrote poetry, lived independently or under the thumb of emperors. A Rome of One’s Own highlights women overlooked and misunderstood, and through them offers a fascinating and groundbreaking chronicle of the ancient world.

Historia
Demeter: a goddess of life, living half of one. Demeter did not always live in fear. Once, she loved the world and the humans who inhabited it. After an act of devastating violence, though, she hides herself away among the grasses and wildflowers. Her only solace is her daughter . . . Before she was Persephone, she was Core. Core is as bright as summer and devoted to her mother, even during their millennia in exile from Olympus. But she craves freedom. Naïve and determined, she secretly builds a life of her own—and as she does so, she catches the eye of a powerful god . .

Outstanding!!!!!!
Revisado: 03-08-25
I just finished this book and I am so sad. It has everything!!!! The narration is amazing. I usually believe it is better to actually read a book, but, with this book, listening was far superior. The story of Demeter and Persephone was so powerful and inspired. I couldn’t wait to listen to each chapter- stayed up way too late and then so depressed that I had to leave the world she had created. You feel like you are there at every moment. You care about the characters deeply. The portrayal of Hades is always varied and problematic. He obviously violates Persephone and as a feminist I am prone to be outraged by his behavior- but, I have to admit I fell in love with him in this story. Right or wrong that is the truth. I realize that it is an easier character experience to be immersed in. All I can say is both sides of this controversy are expressed. I adored every moment of this book. It is a must read.

Historia
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Circe is a must read!!!! I loved Song of Achilles but this was even better. I stayed up late because I couldn’t stop listening and I was sad when it was over. It weaves the story of Circe over millennia, yet never dulls. The characters are rich and compelling. You fail in love with many of them, despite or because of their complexity and darkness. The narration is perfect. If you love this book, you should check out everything Natalie Haynes has on audible and Spotify- I promise you will not be disappointed. Happy listening!

This book captured my attention immediately. The myths are given the authors unique voice colors characters I had boxed into limiting archetypes and gives them depth and nuance that made them so much more interesting. The voice actors are fabulous and everyone of them is the perfect fit. I highly recommend this book- I will definitely come back to it again and again!!!

Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

Compelling and intellectually stimulating
Revisado: 01-24-25
The author is brilliant, she gives a nuanced interpretation to all of the stories she discusses. I feel like I’m indulging in a guilty pleasure- like a terrible romance 1 because it’s so interesting; but, it is incredibly fulfilling. She is a scholar of the Greek classics and myths that you would love to listen to for days. Satisfying to say the least. Bonus - the author has the perfect voice for narrating.

Beautifully written narrative about seeking and forgiveness. It takes you on a journey to identify the wounds you could not name and therefore could not heal - and the redemptive power and healing from finding one’s tribe. This healing changes not just ourselves but the earth we inhabit. You will walk away hopeful and inspired.

Historia
A Dangerous Age tells the story of the women of the Hand family, three cousins in a Southern dynasty rich with history and tradition who are no strangers to either controversy or sadness. By turns humorous and heartbreaking, the novel is a celebration of the strength of these women, and of others like them. In her characteristically clear and direct prose, with its wry, no-nonsense approach to the world and the people who inhabit it, Gilchrist gives voice to women on a collision course with a distant war that, in truth, is never more than a breath away.
