Historia
Many cultural and religious traditions expect those who are grieving to step away from the world. In contemporary life, we are more often met with red tape and to-do lists. This is exactly what happened to Geraldine Brooks when her partner of more than three decades, Tony Horwitz–just sixty years old and, to her knowledge, vigorous and healthy–collapsed and died on a Washington, D. C. sidewalk.

Historia
An inspiring, informative, and practical guide to navigating end-of-life issues, by a groundbreaking expert in the field and the New York Times best-selling author of Knocking on Heaven’s Door. Katy Butler argues that we have lost touch with the “art of dying” as practiced by our ancestors, yet we still hunger for rites of passage and a sense of the sacred, especially in the important life transitions of aging and dying.

A lesson in culinary French history in a contemporary real tale - very heartfelt
Revisado: 10-05-24
The author writes vividly and well, but his pronunciation of the French language is very distracting and quite dreadful. Another narrator would have been so much better. A lovely re-visit to Lyon for me.

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

A gripping tale of dystopian possibility
Revisado: 05-29-23
A slow start quickly yielded to several thoughtfully disturbing scenarios. The story captures the angst of our near future with greed, destruction, tech and climate change all colliding. Ending was too abrupt for well-developed characters but maybe that is the point.

This book is a great follow up read/listen to Bono’s Surrender. And it’s a timely reminder to readers of the agony and pain of Northern Ireland in the recent time of the Troubles. The author weaves her story with just the right lessons about how conflict is influenced by culture. The narrator is superb and adds much to the story with her beautiful accent.

Fascinating insider retelling, with respect
Revisado: 11-23-22
The true stories in this book are a treasure. But the author should not have narrated the book: dreadful awful pronunciation and phrasing with garbled words. Cringeworthy pronunciation of French and Italian and Spanish - just abysmal. English words not up to par either. This wonderful book begs for a professional narrator.
