Complete waste of a credit
Revisado: 05-01-24
I couldn't finish this. The story is banal, unimaginative and slow. I don't even understand what I was listening to. But the thing that made this go from unpleasant to unbearable was the narration. Just... no.

Baffled as to how this is considered humorous
Revisado: 04-25-24
This story is bizarre and not in a good way. The characters are stereotypical, the pace is off, exceptionally slow in some parts then seemingly rushing through other parts. Despite the description and many reviews which I am having a hard time believing aren't incentivized, there is little to no humor in this book, I mean NONE. Certainly there are some attempts at humor but it does not land in the slightest. The mystery isn't much of a mystery lasting for weeks when it could all be resolved in just a few days. There is a twist at the end but it is absurd. I genuinely finished this book desperately hoping it would get better at some point but it doesn't. I am disappointed and I don't plan to continue this series.

Hoping the next book is better
Revisado: 04-15-24
This is another unfortunate case of the initial book in the series being very good, making me salivate wanting more only to be let down by the follow up. There is a new case as well as an ongoing story line (connected to the new case) which I really like. The pace feels a bit off, dead slow at times then picking up here and there. Even though murder and scandal are involved, you never get the feeling of the stakes being very high and I found myself literally not caring what happened in the end. I insisted on finishing it because I was desperately hoping it would finally get good. Unfortunately, it didn't. Due to the fist book being as good as it was, I plan to give this series another try and see what the next installment holds.

Where is the protagonist from?
Revisado: 12-15-23
The narration is so abysmal. I have heard bad, racially insensitive, Xenophobic narration before. but this. This is SO SO SO SO SO BAD! It sounds as if the protagonist is based in the US but she, her sister and everyone they interact with have British (?Australian) accents. Then, there is a character from NY. The narrator sounds like someone making fun of people trying to put on an accent. VERY BAD!Will be returning and getting back my credit.

Mind numbingly boring- Could NOT finish
Revisado: 12-06-23
Oh my goodness, this is one of the most boring things I've ever read/listened to. It's not actually bad writing (I've read far worse) but the fact that every single character (and there are about 20 all introduced around the same time) are one dimensional and just go on with monotonous nothingness. I can't understand how anyone could get through these books and I hardly ever don't finish a book. Will not look for anything else by this author.

The Narrator has GOT TO GO!
Revisado: 11-20-23
The characters are allegedly in their mid-30s- early 40s and written as if they are in their 70s. I'm also confused about what era this is is considering most of the town relies on the library for the Internet and no one seems to use phones but other cues indicate its supposed to be at least the mid-2010s. Lastly, the narration is TERIBLE, truly. She makes them sound elderly (which they are not). There is no way I would listen to this initiative wasn't free in Audlibe plus and I wasn't bored out of my mind.

Captivating, Touching with a hint of Mystery
Revisado: 11-17-23
I honestly had no expectations when I selected this book. It sounded intriguing and I was rushing to select a title before a few days of travel. I actually stopped about 1/4 way but then months later decided to continue and I'm so glad I did.
The characters seem realistic with flaws and all and it tells stories of love and healing but also with a bit of drama and murder. I also appreciate the reference to the Covid-19 Pandemic as so many books and shows never include it as if it didn't impact every aspect of our lives.
This isn't the type of book I generally gravitate to so it was a nice surprise. No matter your preferred genre, the writing is done well enough to keep you interested and invested in the outcomes of the characters.

Historia
James Henry, a kind-hearted professor of English literature, is forced to move back home to Quincy's Gap, a tiny town in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, to care for his aging father. Shortly after moving into a house that hasn't changed since his childhood, the overweight, divorced, book-loving cheese puff addict accepts a position as head librarian and joins a supper club for dieters who call themselves the "Flab Five". Avoiding carbs is almost impossible in this deep-fried, all-you-can-eat Southern town.

It's giving Fat phobic
Revisado: 11-12-23
The premise is interesting, even cool- a group of people meeting up to try and eat healthier and improve their lifestyle. BUT the constant reference to their bodies in a disparaging way, the fact that so many people constantly refer to their bodies and the implication that because they are overweight they constantly think about food and can't help themselves at the mere sight of any unhealthy food is insulting and odd. I hope this aspect of the series changes because the actual story was okay.

Carrot has moved into the Wonder Museum—an eclectic collection of taxidermy, shrunken heads, and Mystery Junk owned by her Uncle Earl. For Carrot, it's not creepy at all: she grew up with it. What's creepy is the corridor behind one of the museum walls. There's just no space for a corridor there—or the concrete bunker, or the strange islands beyond the bunker’s doors, or the unseen things in the willow trees. Carrot has stumbled into a horrifying world, and They are watching her. Strewn among the islands are the remains of Their meals—and Their experiments.

Glad I didn't give up 1/3 way through
Revisado: 10-03-23
This author came very highly recommended and I excitedly purchased this book to kick off my spooky season reading. The beginning is great but there was a part where it got very slow and boring and I know it was meant to be creating an atmosphere but it wasn't succeeding and I was going to stop reading it. However, I persisted and boy was I rewarded for my patience.
The author describes the surroundings fairly well, the main characters are developed well with great dialogue and the story is definitely my vibe. Its a little spooky, a little sci-fi maybe and leaves you to wonder about your own reality. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for something cozy-spooky.

The Narration was borderline racist.
Revisado: 07-21-23
PLEASE authors, narrators, producers whoever. if you have a character of a different race or ethnicity e.g. Native American and Cuban American as in this book, find narrators from these marginalised groups to read the parts of these important characters instead of having the white narrator cosplay as someone from those groups. It was horrible, I can't finish it and likely won't read another book from this author. I also want to mention that tje Cuban-American accent becomes more pronounced as the book goes on sounding more and more like a characature. Awful stuff.
