I was bored to sleep, I tried to listen to it. kept falling asleep and have no clue what it's about.

Every now and then you get brutally reminded how thin the vaneer of civilization is. This story did that quite nicely. It had hints of "The Mist". Our hero are no heros, there are no good choices and no happy endings. And I held out for one till the bitter end.

The Cursed among us

It's been a long time since I truly enjoyed a read and I'm still looking. The plot was too mature for the simplistic writing style. I felt it was written by a kid taking a crack at a slasher story. I found the kids unlikable and their behavior unrealistic. I don't know if the end was an attempt at a surprise ending or an attempt at a sequel but only found it predictable had a bit of an eye roll moment.That being said I did finish it. But I cannot recommend it. Not for me.

A great big mess

I know that books or movies with a shock ending are all the rave these days. But this is not one of those. I saw it coming. The suspense was only when the protagonist would share her information. The thing was really more disturbing than suspenseful. From the sex overshare to the disturbing revelations and which version one is inclined to believe. Both versions of the events are equally disturbing to me. And I could not bring myself to like any of the main characters. Too obsessed with sex and each other. These are not healthy relationships.

Not my thing

While the writing was excellent. I love how he writes and describes his universe. I have to admit Koontz is just too creepy for me. While I enjoy all kinds of survival scenarios Koontz is just a bit too dark for me. The hardest thing is accepting that is monsters are human beings but only biologically. His bad guys are way too evil for me. He truly gives me nightmares.

I have no clue what this story was about. There are 31 hrs and 55 minutes I will never get back. Well, that is not quite fair, I slept through more than half of this book and would love to get the credit back I spend on this. What could have been an epic was tedious and boring. Counting down a series of unfortunate events does not make this a great read. And as for the narrator while I can not speak for most of the accents I do know that her German accent was a crude, bad parody of a constipated Arnold Schwarzenegger. I rooted for Markus to die so I would not have to listen to that gawed awful accent again. To be honest most German accents are bad. But this one stands out by far for bad German accents, I was offended and I don't offend easily. In short, unless you are into pointless stories, read in very bad accents, don't wast your money

The title misleads

I was hoping for a riveting narative about the beginnings and history of language. Instead I got a very dry and dare I say boring exercise in I can't even remember what. The take away here was that we probably had languages before we thought we did.

This one's a keeper

I could not stop listening. And found myself interacting with the characters. This book is wonderfully engaging. The characters three dimensional. It has been a while since I lost sleep over a book, and this one made that happen. You will not be able to use this book for the mindless droning that puts you to sleep at night. You will fail. The story is timeless in the way that the Star Wars saga is timeless. I could go on and on about the depth of the storyline but the best way to find out for yourself is to read, or listen, to the book.
