Historia
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

Too dark and dismal
Revisado: 05-13-24
This story is too dark and pointless. The narrators are the only reason I got through it. Really disappointed as I had hoped for more depth from Paula Hawkins. Save the credit and skip this audiobook.

Historia
Presley Carter is a bright, hungry young defense attorney plying her trade in the areas in and around Nashville. Though she’s haunted by a horrifying event from her past, she’s achieved local renown as a savvy, resourceful lawyer adept at handling–and winning–tough cases. After being approached to file a clemency petition by a father whose son committed a gruesome double-murder, Presley reluctantly agrees to file the document, knowing full well the request has no chance of being granted. Then she receives a phone call informing her the convict’s release has been approved.

Just awful
Revisado: 12-23-23
It’s as if the author made up the plot as he went along. So terribly unrealistic. Do not waste a credit.

In this powerful 15-lecture audio series from award-winning law professor David L. Hudson Jr., you’ll follow the trajectory that led Marshall to become a transformational counsel for the NAACP and in 1967 the first African American Supreme Court justice. He sat on the court for 24 years, leaving an indelible impact in many areas of law. You’ll understand why Justice Elena Kagan has called him “the most important lawyer of the 20th century”.

Key fact regarding Brown decision is Wrong
Revisado: 11-26-23
Lecture 6 incorrectly states that the U.S. Supreme Court in Brown v Board of Education overturned the lower court decisions in all 5 cases consolidated in Brown. In fact, the Supreme Court AFFIRMED Delaware Judge Collins J. Seitz, Sr, who in 1952 ordered the immediate desegregation of a Delaware elementary and high school. Professor Hudson mentions a DISSENT by South Carolina federal judge Waring, but he neglects to get the facts correct about Delaware Judge Seitz’s groundbreaking desegregation ruling that was upheld in the Brown decision.

Important historical account of one judge’s role along the road to desegregation of public schools.
Revisado: 11-25-23
I applaud the author’s detailed account of Judge Waring and his contribution to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision overturning Plessy v Ferguson. Unfortunately, this account utterly dismisses the equally important role of Delaware Judge Collins J. Seitz, Sr., who was the only judge AFFIRMED by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1954 Brown v Board of Education ruling. Judge Waring wrote a courageous dissent. Judge Seitz ruled in favor of the black students and ordered their immediate admission to a public elementary and secondary school in the two consolidated cases before him in 1952. It would have been appropriate for the author to acknowledge Judge Seitz’s unexampled courage as well.

This will be my last Grisham novel. Worst one yet. No plot, stupid ending, no law, not a legal thriller, not a sequel. Just awful.

Good plot, Narration Disappointing
Revisado: 09-20-23
Classic Mitch Rapp action thriller. Creative plot. The only negative is the narrator’s inability to capture Rapp’s voice. His accent for Claudia is painful. Hope George Guidall returns for the next book, which will be written by an author new to the Mitch Rapp series.

I really enjoy Diane Chamberlain’s books, but this one was disappointing. Characters were flat and predictable. Not sure who the target audience is either. My advice is to skip this one.
