If you can get past the narrator the story itself is quite good. I had to relisten to several sections to make sure I understood what was said based on context clues but I get what they were trying to do, which was tell the story as close to what the characters would have sounded like as possible, which is possible. The narrator for Spinning Silver did this very successfully. This narrator was very choppy and I could hear how tired she was in some sections because from one sentence to the next I could hear a distinct difference in the voice like it was a new recording day. There were also times where there was just no inflection with the heavy accent that sounded somehow both Polish and Spanish(?) so it was a struggle to understand what was happening.

Anyway the book is a pretty good YA novel with a couple of spicy parts that were fairly well written.

Trigger Warnings: attempted rape and death.

I really really wanted to love it... but I didn't.

I wanted so badly to love this book and there are so many great things about it. I love the idea of a story told from the perspective of a black slave owner and her struggles with class and race. But I felt like I couldn't connect with her or with the other characters.

The narrator was an interesting choice, her accent was great but her delivery was bland and at times inconsistent enough to distract from the story.
