Eye opening memoir

Loved the story line, especially bc it was told from the point of view of a young child. I thought it was a bit wordy for my taste, but overall, I appreciated the memoir. Very touching.

but thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator’s voice is very calming. Despite the storyline, this is a feel-good book. Five stars.

Historia
Every day Iona, a larger-than-life magazine advice columnist, travels the ten stops from Hampton Court to Waterloo Station by train, accompanied by her dog, Lulu. Every day she sees the same people, whom she knows only by nickname: Impossibly-Pretty-Constant-Reader and Terribly-Lonely-Teenager. Of course, they never speak. Seasoned commuters never do. Then one morning, the man she calls Smart-But-Sexist-Manspreader chokes on a grape right in front of her. He’d have died were it not for the timely intervention of Sanjay, a nurse, who gives him the Heimlich maneuver.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

First of all, the narration was superb. I had no idea what to expect from this book but it was down-to-earth and sweet. I’ll most likely listen a 2nd time.

Didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. The narrator was difficult to understand and very whiny. This one just didn’t catch my attention. I was hoping to love it simply bc of the title.

Revisado: 07-11-24
Such a compelling story that was hard to read, but also had to be told. Holly truly honored Chris by putting her story in writing. It reminds us that true evil exists in the world but so does resiliency and goodness. May his memory live forever and may this memoir bring Holly peace.

Historia
For O.J. Simpson to get away with murder, an innocent cop, a brilliant detective, had to be destroyed. That was the cynical strategy of the Simpson defense. But as certainty about Simpson's guilt grew, so did the outrage about the scapegoating of Mark Fuhrman. Now the former LAPD detective tells his side of the story in a damning expose.

Eye-opening account
Revisado: 04-28-24
It’s alarming to read this account of the details. So much incompetence - it was the perfect storm, really. And Fuhrman was the fall guy. Even so, O.J. should’ve been easily convicted. What a shame.
