Audio is not the best format for this, but hey it still helped. I did catch one question near the end that had an incorrect answer (it implied that the Product Owner is not part of the Scrum team, which they are).

Literally a list of 600+ life tips
Revisado: 02-16-25
For the most part, this would be a great book for someone in high school, college, or starting their first job. At age 39, I found only a couple nuggets in the list. Still, at only 1.5 hrs, it was a nice passive listen while multi-tasking other things. Personally, I think some of the advice given is a bit too binary/prescriptive (e.g. "Don't gamble"), since it is one father's advice to his son and thus not meant to be universal. Not sure I'd hand this in its exact form to my own kid one day, but rather perhaps draw inspiration from it to make my own version or something.

In this audiobook, we’ll be discussing a few topics all of us will face. Herd mentality, insecurity, and topics that are related to how we can “think outside the box". We’ll talk about why and how people act the same way or adopt similar behaviors as the people around them - often ignoring their own feelings in the process.

Cliche and doesn't really teach lateral thinking
Revisado: 02-16-25
Unfortunately, this book was more a string of cliches, generic life advice, and assorted stories than actually teaching how to engage in lateral thinking. If you don't know that you can do anything that you put your mind to, or that you should learn from your mistakes, then this book is for you. Some of the imagined scenarios to explain an idea are also completely ridiculous / unrealistic. I'd like an hour of my life back.

Ben Horowitz offers essential advice on building and running a startup - practical wisdom for managing the toughest problems business school doesn’t cover, based on his popular ben’s blog. While many people talk about how great it is to start a business, very few are honest about how difficult it is to run one. The Hard Thing About Hard Things is invaluable for veteran entrepreneurs as well as those aspiring to their own new ventures, drawing from Horowitz’s personal and often humbling experiences.

The coauthors of the seminal book The Virtual Corporation describe how the rise of artificial intelligence and virtual environments are ushering in an epic cultural transformation - and how we can thrive in this new era. We are at the dawn of the Autonomous Revolution, a turning point in human history as decisive as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. More and more, AI-based machines are replacing human beings, and online environments are gathering our data and using it to manipulate us.

Interesting ideas
Revisado: 05-30-21
This book contains some interesting ideas drawing from the past to look into the future. I was a bit bugged by the fact that the narrator mispronounces several words and the overall recording quality is mediocre at best (audible static, background sounds, etc.). Still a thought provoking listen though!

Conventional wisdom says most startups need to be in Silicon Valley, started by young engineers around a sexy new idea and backed by VC funding. But as Mikkel Svane reveals in Startupland, the story of founding Zendesk was anything but conventional. Founded in a Copenhagen loft by three 30-something friends looking to break free from corporate doldrums, Zendesk Inc. is now one of the hottest enterprise software companies, still rapidly growing with customers in 150 countries.

Interesting story, not my fave narration
Revisado: 01-31-20
There's some really interesting tidbits in Zendesk's story, and I liked how Mikkel tells it like he's talking to you. At first, I almost had to stop due to the narrator's voice, but managed to plow through. I just don't understand why so many business books have to be narrated in such a matter-of-fact, newscaster-like fashion.

Historia
Why is profitable growth so hard to achieve and sustain? Most executives manage their companies as if the solution to that problem lies in the external environment - find an attractive market, formulate the right strategy, win new customers. But when Bain & Company's Chris Zook and James Allen (authors of the best-selling Profit from the Core) researched this question, they found that when companies fail to achieve their growth targets, 90 percent of the time the root causes are internal, not external.

Decent messages, terrible narrator
Revisado: 01-07-20
Almost couldn't finish this thanks to the overly dramatic, matter-of-fact, newscaster-like narrator. He just has to pronounce every sentence like it's the most profound idea since sliced bread. Come on, it's 2020, there are better ways to narrate business books. Other than that, there are certainly some interesting research findings and observations presented here.

Historia
We've decided by consensus that consensus is good. In In Defense of Troublemakers, psychologist Charlan Nemeth argues that this principle is completely wrong: left unchallenged, the majority opinion is often biased, unoriginal, or false. It leads planes and markets to crash, causes juries to convict innocent people, and can quite literally make people think blue is green. In the name of comity, we embrace stupidity. We can make better decisions by embracing dissent. Dissent forces us to question the status quo, consider more information, and engage in creative decision-making.

Interesting ideas, too long
Revisado: 11-22-19
It's a bit unnecessarily long / repetitive in making its points, but definitely some interesting ideas to keep in mind. Also wish the narration didn't sound like a documentary out of 1995, but maybe that's just me.

Enlightening and inspiring
Revisado: 08-10-19
This was a story worth hearing to learn about the challenges of someone like Molly. Although her voice was a bit hard for me to listen to, it was definitely more compelling to hear her story as told by herself. I think she has some good messages that hopefully will help create a better society.
