Has Vision, But Can It Weather the AI Storm?
Revisado: 07-17-24
Sherrington's passion for teaching is evident throughout the book. He provides a compelling argument for creating dynamic and engaging learning environments that foster deep understanding and critical thinking. The distinction between "Mode A" (teacher-led instruction) and "Mode B" (student-centered exploration) offers a useful framework for educators to balance different instructional approaches.
The 60 practical strategies in the book's second part can serve as valuable tools for teachers looking to enhance their classroom practices. These strategies are grounded in research and Sherrington's experiences, making them credible and actionable.
However, in a post-COVID context, where educational inequities have been starkly highlighted, the book's focus on ideal conditions for learning may seem overly optimistic and not fully attuned to the challenges of diverse classrooms. The pandemic has exacerbated disparities in access to technology, support, and resources, and Sherrington's strategies may need adaptation to be relevant and effective in these varied contexts. Also, in an era where AI can instantly provide information and even engage in basic analysis, the goal of creating "philosopher kids" may need recalibration.
Although many of the practices could be translated to primary teachers, this felt geared toward the secondary school range of educators.

Book Club Approved! 🤓👏
Revisado: 09-17-23
I organize a professional reading book club and this was a deviation from our normal reads. But it was a hit. We all got so much from reading it, and the fact that we read it together, makes it even more fun. It helped myself and others recognize opportunities from joy in our lives. I definitely felt more motivated to turn the mundane into something fresh and exciting. Moreover, the strategies to avoid burnt out has proved to be very useful. Thank you so much for writing this book. ❤️Encourage everyone to read it.

Historia
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. David Epstein examined the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields—especially those that are complex and unpredictable—generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel.

Fascinating-Definitely made me reflect
Revisado: 04-15-23
This was a very interesting book that delve into a variety of topics to show how important it is to study, seemingly unrelated information in order to make connections and develop new innovations. It also was fascinating about the power of constraints, and the ability to become an expert despite specialization.

Great family read
Revisado: 04-24-21
We listened as a family and we felt like we were taken into the forest. The concept of living off the land and the boy’s ingenuity made it a great story. But the ending was very emotional.

Historia
The construct of race has always been used to gain and keep power, to create dynamics that separate and silence. This remarkable reimagining of Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's National Book Award-winning Stamped from the Beginning reveals the history of racist ideas in America, and inspires hope for an antiracist future. It takes you on a race journey from then to now, shows you why we feel how we feel, and why the poison of racism lingers. It also proves that while racist ideas have always been easy to fabricate and distribute, they can also be discredited.

Gives Context for Current Views of Racist ideas
Revisado: 07-03-20
We read this book as a family and it was an interesting and engaging book throughout. The book was an insightful account of the makings of systematic racism in America. It really got you thinking about assimilation vs segregation ideas and, to that end, makes it a lot easier to spot them in the media. There’s no doubt that protecting white supremacy is the rationale for so much of the violence today.
If I had to find fault, the school to prison pipeline wasn’t really developed in the way that I thought it could explain the current context for black Americans. There also could have been more elaboration on BlackLives Matter. But many history books spend more of its content on the past and skimp on the present. However they claim this is “not a history book” so there you go.

Drawing on groundbreaking research in economics, psychology, philosophy, and education, The New Childhood shows how technology is guiding humanity toward a bright future in which our children will be able to create new, better models of global citizenship, connection, and community.

Finally a book on raising digital natives that makes sense!
Revisado: 04-13-20
I’ve read a lot of books about how to support digital natives with their digital habits. However this is the first book that really helped me to appreciate the perspective and strategies I could use to support my child. It also gave me a lot of pause for reflection when it came to educating children who are digital natives.
This is a thought provoking book that every parent and teacher should read. It gave me a lot of insight into how we should be supporting our children instead of trying to make them fit inside our archaic definitions of digital use. I highly recommend it!

Revisado: 06-03-19
My 9 year old hopes there is a second part to this book. The characters were unique and interesting. The whole concept of learning to know who you are and what you stand for was an unexpected part of the story that made it really enjoyable. Would recommend.

Heart wrenching but lovely stories of heroic efforts
Revisado: 04-26-19
My nine year daughter thought the story was engaging and surprising with all the hardship people go through. It is was really well written but, as an adult, I had to stop the book at some parts because of the strong emotion it brought up with the harrowing tales.
