Inspiring material for language lovers
Revisado: 08-13-14
I was really excited to find this book because I've tried off and on to learn different languages, but was never successful. I was even praised in beginning level courses for my quick pick up on the material, but whenever I reached something beyond the basics I would fumble. Listening to this book kind of pointed out to me why this was happening. I have found myself listening and re-listening to this book finding new points to draw from and it makes me excited and always revitalized ready to continue my language learning journey assured that I will succeed this time.
I will say that if you are willing to delve into his actual website you can find all this information and maybe even find a video of the author telling it to you. I clearly was not and enjoy the portability of this book in Audio form.
In a short summary: If you find yourself stuck in your language learning journey and cannot figure out why, maybe give this book a listen and see if it can point you in the right direction.

Beekman Place, once one of the most exclusive addresses in Manhattan, had a curious way of making it into the tabloids in the 1930s: SKYSCRAPER SLAYER, BEAUTY SLAIN IN BATHTUB read the headlines. On Easter Sunday in 1937, the discovery of a grisly triple homicide at Beekman Place would rock the neighborhood yet again - and enthrall the nation. The young man who committed these murders would come to be known in the annals of American crime as the Mad Sculptor.

Decent Experience, but rather jumbled
Revisado: 08-13-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If I had to recommend this to a group of people it would be history/crime buffs who will listen to this with their undivided attention. If you give this book any less than 100%, at least in my experience, you quickly become lost.
What could Harold Schechter have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
While to subject itself was rather interesting the actual book itself seemed to try and cover two related, but different topics. An extremely large portion of this book was focused on one murder case where to book gets most of it's title "The Mad Sculptor", but then there are random off shoots to other crimes that happened in one particular building. While I enjoyed them it made this book extremely jarring one minute I'm following a killer and then BAM something else is going on.
What didn’t you like about Peter Berkrot’s performance?
It was okay, the entire performance seemed really angry though which was off putting. Maybe it was just the genre?
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
My main reaction was disappointment, it really seemed like this should have been two separate books. One focusing on the "Mad Sculptor" case and the other either an over view of all these cases or a book dedicated to all the murders that happened in that complex.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 08-05-14
When I first heard the narrators voice I was a little hesitant to get this book, but the price sold me in the end. As a Bharatanatyam dancer I really enjoy researching and listening/reading the various translations of the old stories from India. I found this one was quite nice to listen to either at work or in the car because of the narrator. His voice has definitely grown on me and in fact I'm re-listening to it right now.
I would definitely recommend it to people who listen to various translations of these tales because as I always find that they change every time. The best example is the Ramayana, it is what people want you to get out of the story.

Really disappointed
Revisado: 08-05-14
What disappointed you about 1st to Die?
Almost everything about this book I found disappointing. From the fact that the narrator made me feel like the main character was Bea Arthur and not in a good way (huge Golden Girl's fan), to the extremely flat one dimensional characters, but the fact that one of the female leads during her introduction, but almost every possible chance the author stated that she was black as if this was her defining thing. As someone who can enjoy simple characters (I often dabble in YA fiction) this was just to much to listen to.
What was most disappointing about James Patterson’s story?
The most disappointing thing I would have to say is the character development. I often found myself wondering who people were and often they were some of the main characters.
Would you be willing to try another one of Suzanne Toren’s performances?
I don't think I would want to try another of her performances, I didn't really enjoy listening to the sound of her voices and this is just personal opinion, but it didn't seem like a lot of effort was put into the performance.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I guess the plot twists? I don't know even those weren't really that redeeming in the book because they put so little emphasis on character development they didn't make that much sense.
Any additional comments?
I am definitely returning this one as fast as possible.

Wish I knew you can get this for free
Revisado: 08-05-14
So I'm kicking myself for actually paying for this item. You can get the exact same course for free via podcast on iTunes and I do mean the exact same thing.
While the content of this course is nice, and broken down into extremely short manageable pieces, which is a great plus for any language learning course, the narrator reading it is so awkward sounding. She is speaking so slowly that it could be considered painful and this isn't just when she is speaking Hindi, but also when she speaks English. This is maybe around 60-70 wpm. Which is extremely slow for a native English speaker.
On the flip side the time they give you to respond to her questions is extremely short, in fact for myself an intermediate level speaker who can speak some of these phrases at a rather fast clip it is way to fast to say more than four words.
Overall I would say that the information itself is why I rated this so high, not the narration, not the price (because as I mentioned you can get this for free), but at least if you don't have an iPod this is a rather cheap course to purchase.

Whispers and dark memories of witch trials and the women burned at the stake just seventy years earlier still haunt the streets of Schongau.

Decent
Revisado: 04-17-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I guess I would, while at times the story was good I would have to know if they liked history based books before telling them to read/listen to it.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I enjoyed the detective aspect of the novel it was exciting to see the characters to try and solve things with out the tools of modern technology. The romance, it was kind of boring and I found pointless.
What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?
The performance of this book was pretty good, but his voice was very relaxing and I found I had to listen to the book at an accelerated speed to prevent myself from falling asleep.
Was The Hangman's Daughter worth the listening time?
I'm not sure if this book was worth listening to because I'm still undecided if I liked the book or not.

A major audiobook about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Brilliant Book
Revisado: 04-17-14
I heard about this book one morning while watching the news and was super excited to see that it was offered on Audible because it covers something I wanted to learn more about. I found myself excited to learn about the history of how we classify extinction and how animals adapted to try and prevent it, and at the same time extremely sad to hear about how it was happening in modern day times. I feel more on top of the news coming out actually because of this book.

Decent material
Revisado: 04-17-14
I really enjoyed this as an audio book because when you listen to a lesson again you can play it faster to really check you mastery of the material that it covered. I do have a mild issue where the speakers will say the same word at least three different ways and wont stay consistent with what they originally told you. The only reason I take issue with this is the constant reminder to "check your pronunciation against the native speaker" which if you don't know how they will pronounce it this time how can you?
I'm also sad that they don't have the next level of this. Otherwise this is a good starter set to learning Hindi, it kind of stops short of being really useful for traveling in India, but great start.

What would have made Free: I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas better?
A different voice actor, I am very sorry for the people who enjoyed this book I don't mean to offend you. The person who read this book was an instant turn off for me and I wasn't able to even try and think about liking the plot.
Would you be willing to try another one of Amanda Ronconi’s performances?
No, I would never recommend this to anyone, I'm sorry if it makes people feel better I am the one person in my friend circle who did not or does not watch Dexter due to the main characters voice.
Any additional comments?
Really happy that this book was free.

Extremely awkward
Revisado: 02-24-14
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, the story was not very well written and the reading of this book made it more awkward to listen to.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The idea behind this book was the most interesting aspect of this story, but the least interesting was the character development, they seemed very one dimensional and it was very hard to understand the motivation behind most, if not all characters actions.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Liv Anderson?
This is what made the book least enjoyable, the "unique" way that she decided to do different characters voices was imitated by myself and my friends for cheap laughs and it just kept me from connecting to the book in any way.
Could you see Mark of the Demon being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, not unless they changed the story dramatically much like they did to True Blood I could not see anyone watching this.
