solid collection of stories
Revisado: 09-02-24
this collection is likely most well known for the popular short story, The Ancient Awaits, but I wouldn't advise anyone skip any other story to get there. There are no duds here. All stories contain a satisfying peek into the mind, makings, or methods of a primarch.

Historia
Gotrek and Felix: unsung heroes of the Empire or nothing more than common thieves and murderers? The truth perhaps lies somewhere in between and depends entirely upon whom you ask. The storm clouds are gathering over the icy city of Praag as the evil forces of Chaos lay murderous siege to the frozen lands of Kislev. Standing between the massed hordes of darkness and the city's destruction are dwarf slayer Gotrek Gurnisson and his sworn human companion, Felix Jaeger.

I like stories about battles and sieges
Revisado: 01-25-22
this story has both of those things. I've also grown attached to Snorri Nosebiter. He's been a real solid, good dude these past 2 books.

enjoyable, just a bit jumpy.
Revisado: 01-20-21
Maybe it's just the style of the book but it seemed to go from set piece to set piece and sort of "yadda yadda'd" over the in betweens.
Some people might like that more than the alternative, more action, less traveling between towns. It caught me off guard how they'd just sometimes wrap things up in 2 sentences and move onto the next thing.
Great voice for Gotrek

Historia
The Shadow Crusade has begun. While the Ultramarines reel from Kor Phaeron's surprise attack on Calth, Lorgar and the rest of the Word Bearers strike deep into the realm of Ultramar. Their unlikely allies, Angron and the World Eaters, continue to ravage each new system they come across - upon the garrison planet of Armatura, this relentless savagery may finally prove to be their undoing. Worlds will burn, Legions will clash and a primarch will fall.

ADB is a master
Revisado: 06-13-20
it is a pleasure to listen to the nearly poetic prose of Aaron Dembski-Bowden, particularly following even a good effort by Graham McNeil. A world where ADB wrote all the W40K books would be a much better one but, since we live in this reality, every book we are blessed to have him write should be enjoyed like wine in a world full of grape juice and vinegar.

Historia
Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all.

worst 40K book I've ever wasted time on. SKIP IT
Revisado: 04-25-20
this book has convinced me that Graham McNiell uses ghostwriters. what a shit show. mild spoiler ahead.

the book gets Magnus' spirit visit to Terra wrong by 2 years and makes it make no sense then later tops itself in ridiculousness by having a fully armed and armored custodian lose in a 1 on 1 fight to a naked World Eater. This is C.S. Groto level writing. skip this book.

performance pretty good, story also pretty good.
Revisado: 03-14-20
I don't want to spoil anything, so i'll just say 1 of the characters is a bit of a Mary Sue, there are some parts with a lot of characters all talking to one character, but half of them aren't developed or unique enough to remember who is who, and certain people could have really benefited from an off-site, air-gapped, backup solution.
