Revisado: 11-05-24
Do narrators not get pronunciation guides? Very jarring to here names of places and words mis pronounced. The "story" is just so oddly cobbled together between definitions of historical artifacts and customs and poorly articulated Christian platitudes it struggles to be engaging. Reads much more like a teenager trying to be clever with their report on ancient Rome while attempting to "witness" to their class than an actual novel with relatable characters. Just really really odd.

Not a retelling
Revisado: 07-08-24
Fairytales should have magic, the Rumple story was just bizarre, unbelievable but not in a fun or imaginative way, just bizarre and borderline ridiculous. Oddly, adding a magic element would have made the story more believable. The characters were not particularly likeable, least of all the main character, and the "love" story was cringy, unrelateable and fraught with painfully contrived "tension" that added nothing but greater length for the listener to slog through before coming mercifully to the end. Bizarre story, dull characters, not at all a fun tale, glad it's over.

Good start, despite juvenile senseless swearing!
Revisado: 04-15-24
This is a fun book... Entertaining overcoming odds, team etc... Travis Baldree is a master as always.. But my main complaint is the really silly and unnecessary swearing of the main character. I'm not upset by the language persay, but it's jarring because it doesn't fit the story, the world or the character at all. Just kinda lazy on the part of the author. They have a "by Aldars beard" phrase and then if Alex gets scared he says s**t? Really? Like a lot he says it. And it just grates. Surely the author could have come up with an appropriate exclamation that fits the world better. A bizarre and lazy choice.
That said, I will finish and likely listen to the next. Mostly because I love Travis Baldree, and he makes even a mediocre story pretty fantastic.

Historia
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Revisado: 08-15-23
I'd rather listen to Ben Stein read Leviticus in Latin. Snooze alert! I tried really hard to like this book, but I couldn't get past the strange choppy delivery and monotonous drudge of magic history blah that was never ending.

Revisado: 08-04-23
*stomping my foot in frustration-and fold my arms across my chest* Well this book did one thing... I actually believe in magic or at least in the unbelievable.... after believing these books couldn't possibly get worse... They did *I stomp my foot to make my point*. All of it... The writing-absolutely abysmal, technically (like basic grammar) and conceptually. *stamp foot and cross arms to communicate my frustration*
The narrorator... Baily Samantha Peachwood Carr CANNOT perform accents to save her life *I stamp my foot to emphasize my disgust* Made even worse by the authors constant commentary about the "crispness" of the characters accent. Just so bizarre and infuriating really, (I say as I stomp my foot on the ground in protest) This series is like the train wreck you can't help but stare at in horror and disbelief... Can't get through even at 1.5 speed. If I roll my eyes any harder I fear they might fall out of my head. *double foot stomp for good measure*

Terrible Narrorator, Cringy Story
Revisado: 07-31-23
I only gave 2 stars overall so I could give the performance less than that... I wish 0 starts was an option. Unbearably awful accents and character voices-so bad I would feel sorry for the author if her story wasn't equally as terrible. Nothing about how this story was built or unfolded made any sense, after a while listening just made me mad. Such a waste of time.

Zombies,.... Seriously? >eye roll<
Revisado: 07-12-23
Crash and burn installment in an otherwise fairly entertaining series. By far my least favorite narrorator and frankly just a snooze fest of a story. And the "climax" was filled with such ridiculous antics I think I actually groaned out loud. If a book can jump the shark this was a prime example. All I can say is, I'm glad it's over.

Too much time for too little story
Revisado: 06-10-23
So many of these serial authors are masters of dragging a 30 minute story into a "book". The narrorator is extremely grating. She's never had much range and has weird emphasis and distracting pronunciation, but this was easily the most jilting delivery yet. Boring story that totally ignores the one interesting thing that has happened... The DRAGON! Title suggests something significant will come from the sword... But no, just a boring new sword that is "evil" and glows green. Boring no actual story or "memory" or anything intriguing. This series reminds me of those overly dramatic elongated death scenes in sketch comedies where the character won't die because they want attention. Not interested in what comes next.

Historia
A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

Narrorator distracting
Revisado: 05-20-23
So, I didn't so much mind the Romance aspect, although it wasn't expected. I do mind that the first two books had almost identical plot structures. But the most genuinely troubling issue is the bizarre pronunciation and inflection of the narrorator. First, the word "mountain" has a "t" in it. As do most contractions... Glottal stop pronunciation is the auditory equivalent of a sharp slap. She had some really odd choices for emphasis, not as bad as Scott Brick who is TERRIBLE,!! But it was distraction... The very very worst offense though was her inability to properly pronounce the double "oo" sound in words like "room, boom, and broom" it was so irritating to here characters "step into a rum" hear a loud "bum" or pick up a "brum" I had to talk back every time and say "Roooom" "booom" oo, as in rhymes with you, flu, poo... Like your pronunciation! In general, I'm glad it was free, it wasn't bad exactly, but it was average with a side of vanilla.

Oh My!
Revisado: 05-07-23
So I read some reviews that totally panned the book, I thought they were a bit harsh, but as it drug on I understood. First, the narrorator must get paid by the completed hour because his delivery is comically sloth like. Even during action sequences... He was also very inconsistent with voices, accents for characters and little to know difference between male and female characters. Lack of skill in characterization and maintaining a consistent performance was distracting and confusing at times.
The comments about abysmal character relationships and extremely juvenile dialogue isn't wrong. It became hard to listen to. The constant gesticulating was a bit much and after a while the "he said" "she said" he said, she said through a conversation gave me a mental image of stick figures stiffly gesticulating at each other and Charlie brown voices going "wah wa wah wa, wawah"
Overall lots of problems, and will not be reading the third book... I just don't care what happens.
