Historia
September 1943: German forces occupy Rome. SS officer Paul Hauptmann rules with terror. The war's outcome is far from certain. An Irish priest, Hugh O'Flaherty, dedicates himself to helping those escaping from the Nazis. His home is Vatican City, the world's smallest state, a neutral, independent country within Rome where the occupiers hold no sway. Here Hugh brings together an unlikely band of friends to hide the vulnerable under the noses of the enemy. But Hauptmann's net begins closing in on the Escape Line and the need for a terrifyingly audacious mission grows critical.

Wrong narrator
Revisado: 11-26-23
Wished for a more authentic narrator for post war Israel story. Not that the narrator is bad, just not suitable to the character, time period and place. I have bought and read all the books in the series - this is not the sound of the Hungarian Jew I heard in my head, pity.
I also dislike main characters with a god complex. Forcing someone else to confess to the police to murder while finding his own murders and those orchestrated by him “deserved “? What gives one the right?
I love the period and place of these novels and I enjoy the author’s writing. I will try the next book, maybe the narrator grows on me.

Really silly
Revisado: 07-30-23
So many inconsistencies and inaccuracies I do not know where to start. In short, just a silly novella. I will not be reading another story in this series.

Historia
It's 1914, and talk of war feels far away to Henry Gaunt, Sidney Ellwood and the rest of their classmates, safely ensconced in their idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. At seventeen, they're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with his best friend, the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that Ellwood is in love with him, always has been. When Gaunt's German mother asks him to enlist as an officer in the British army to protect the family from anti-German attacks, Gaunt signs up immediately.

Historia
Craiglockhart, a hospital for officers ravaged by their experiences in trench warfare, is the setting for Pat Barker's Regeneration. Here the poet Siegfried Sassoon, author of an article condemning the war, came under the care of psychiatrist W.H.R Rivers whose duty, as he saw it, was to return Sassoon to all the horrors of the Front, because Sassoon was sane, was healthy, and he had made a commitment.

Revisado: 12-13-20
This is such a great novel, the abridged version does not do it justice. The narrator is very good though - hopefully unabridged versions of all three novels that make up this trilogy will become available. I for one will buy them all.

Perfection!
Revisado: 10-08-15
Narrator and story absolutely superb, I enjoyed every minute of it (for the third time now, it's that good). I especially appreciate the relationship between the two main and very different characters. I, for one, am tired of buying mysteries only to find them part romance novels. The Strings of Murder is a gem and I sincerely hope that Mr. De Muriel is busy on his next novel!

Powerful, pity about unbelievable female character
Revisado: 10-08-15
What did you like best about The Power of the Dog? What did you like least?
The realism of the story was inspiring, the research the author must have done daunting. It really is a pity that he chose to deviate from this realism where the main female character was concerned (remnant of an adolescent fancy?). To each his own I suppose, but I found this fancilfulness ultimately boring, it deminished the rest of this powerful novel. Furthermore, I wonder at many authors' opinion that the (violent) death of women and children should be worse than the death of men. Why exactly is that? Are the lives of men of lesser value?
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Realistic, effective and strong except, once again, for the 'ríding off into the sunset' element.
What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?
Everything, he is a truly wonderful narrator.
Do you think The Power of the Dog needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No, the novel is complete as is.
Any additional comments?
I will definitely listen to more novels narrated by Mr. Porter and although I enjoyed most of this novel and applaud Mr. Winslow on his research and delivery, won't be adding him to my automatic author buy.

Historia
Jason Grant doesn't have much, aside from a beat-up old guitar and knack for getting kicked out of foster homes. His latest placement is set to be just another in a long line of failures. Then he meets Caesar Hubbard, a handsome guy who lives down the hall. For the first time in his life, Jason wants to stay, which means learning to be part of a family, and not letting his feelings - or his actions - ruin his first real chance of falling in love.

Disappointed
Revisado: 04-21-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The narrator is great, but I don't think I'll listen to the book again soon - this mostly because I found the story disappointing. Besides the fact that it irked me that so little mention was made of Jace - what, not a single photograph to be found or annecdote to be told about him? - it was as though the author has told this tale before. Maybe I should have just stopped following this series with Something Like Autumn.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jay Bell? Why or why not?
I think I will skip the rest of the series.
What does Kevin R. Free bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He reads a perfect book: nothing to irritate the ear and easy to follow. Intonation and pitch of speech were very good too.
Could you see Something Like Spring being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, I wouldn't go to see it.
Any additional comments?
I love Jay Bell and the previous Something Like .... books, but this one I do not. Pity.
