Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

How courage can arise from fearlessness and fearfulness
Revisado: 04-26-24
A beautifully written and performed book about the ugliness of war and profound courage that it takes to survive it and to help as many of those around us survive it as well.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Historia
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Painfully misogynistic culture
Revisado: 12-04-23
I’d hoped in the beginning of this book that Lady Tan would eventually break down some of the misogynistic barriers around her but she remained trapped, both physically and mentally right to the end. Was this book truthful to the culture of the time and place? Probably. Was it pleasant to inhabit as a woman? Not at all. I rarely give up on books but had I read my review beforehand, I would have never bought this book!

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

No one can write dialogue and reality the way Kingsolver does. Brilliant! Best book I’ve listened to this year!

Excellent story that I loved for its adherence to the realities of farming, midlife, the perception of of an experience bending with time, excellent writing (as always from Patchett), superb narration!!!!

Not Fossum's Best
Revisado: 07-09-12
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Karin Fossum is an excellent writer, and I am a big fan, but this book doesn't measure up to her best. It is very, very dark, and sad. Her previous books are slightly dark, and not very sad. This went over the edge to me, and I just wanted to finish it.
What does David Rintoul bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
David Rintoul has a lovely deep and resonant voice. He carries the listener along.
Any additional comments?
Inspector Sejer is a favorite protagonist, but his ruminations don't get enough room in this story.
