Historia
For millennia, owls have captivated and intrigued us. Our fascination with these mysterious birds was first documented more than thirty thousand years ago in the Chauvet Cave paintings in southern France. With their forward gaze and quiet flight, owls are often a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. But what does an owl really know? And what do we really know about owls? Jennifer Ackerman illuminates the rich biology and natural history of these birds and reveals remarkable new scientific discoveries about their brains and behavior.

Historia
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

A very important book
Revisado: 05-27-21
This is a fast paced history of the early months of the pandemic. True to form, Lewis found the backstage agents of our best pandemic response. If you wrote this as a fiction thriller, no one would believe such souls could exist.
This is a wildly important book for the history of medicine and also a cautionary tale of what we are not doing right. As medicine is controlled by corporate interests, the public health is restrained by political expediency. Neither is effective and we need to understand the forces at work if we are to do better next time. And there will be a next time.
The narrator is also excellent with a clear, crisp reading.
This is definite movie material.
Highly recommended.

Historia
Few people have made decisions as momentous as Eisenhower, nor has one person had to make such a varied range of them. From D-Day to Little Rock, from the Korean War to Cold War crises, from the Red Scare to the Missile Gap controversies, he was able to give our country eight years of peace and prosperity by relying on a core set of principles. These were informed by his heritage and upbringing, his strong character and his personal discipline, but he also avoided making himself the center of things. He tried to be the calmest man in the room, not the loudest.

A President of the UNITED States
Revisado: 09-10-20
We already have a good understanding of our current political situation thanks to excellent investigative reporting. Susan Eisenhower's superb memoir of her grandfather's presidency is what we need to hear now. My generation remembers him as a real, living person, but for the majority of Americans, he is a historical character.
I cannot thank Ms. Eisenhower enough for bringing one of our most thoughtful and capable leaders back into public consciousness. This book is brilliant and essential reading for those who want to know what worked before and how to go forward into the future.
We know where we are. Thank you Ms. Eisenhower for showing us where we need to go.

What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

Essentials of Government in real time.
Revisado: 10-24-18
This is a short book, and I almost passed it by on that basis alone. However, a great deal is packed into this compact and riveting narrative. This audio-book is not only an education in the function of the major departments of the Federal Government, but also contains heartening tales of the brilliant civic servants who are holding it all together.
One observation that has stayed with me is this. Many of the talented individuals attracted to government service, despite the lower wages, are first and second generation immigrants familiar with the suffering cause by failed states. That is certaily an object lesson for us all.

In the face of a president who lobs accusations without facts, evidence, or logic, truth tellers are under attack. Meanwhile, the world order is teetering on the brink. North Korea is on the verge of having a nuclear weapon that could reach all of the United States, Russians have mastered a new form of information warfare that undercuts democracy, and the role of China in the global community remains unclear.

A critically important work
Revisado: 07-27-18
Of the many excellent books recently published by the intelligence community, this one is my favorite. Each one has a special point of view, and The Assault on Intelligence is uniquely nuanced with his life experience and perceptions.
The reading in his own voice allows the intention and emotion to come through. You really know how he felt about critical issues that threaten our democracy.
It pleases me greatly that we have such individuals serving the country. Beannachd leibh (Gaelic for Bless them all)
