Chp 8 couldn't finish
Revisado: 05-02-24
I've listened to several books from this series, and was interested in hearing Undrea's story from seeing her in other novels, but I've officially given up on this one at Chapter 8. The male main character, Ethan, has come off as an ick person. I kept waiting for him to do something redeeming, but him 'confronting' his girlfriend about always ordering a salad ( "that's not living" ) because he's started to compare her with the shiny new woman that eats meatloaf and pizza is so incredibly unattractive on top of his already lame personality that I'm just done with the whole thing. I get the sense that the author will try to redeem him by making her the villain, but even if she's actually horrible and not just snooty, that doesn't excuse his behavior. Narration is so so, as usual. A little too over-pronounved, especially the Ts, which even playing at 1.2x speed doesn't quite allow me to listen over.

Something to listen to
Revisado: 04-14-24
I’ve listened to this whole series thats available so far, and I’m currently on a second listen through as I’m out of new books to read. Story is interesting, though the overpowered, conveniently highly knowledgeable about everything from irrigation to disease to war strategy MC is eye roll inducing at times - but I confess to loving a good OP MC and subsequent public shock reaction, so it gets a pass from me. What is irritating me on the relisten is the fact that all the female characters in the book are either totally 2 dimensional personalities (not surprising as almost no characters have any depth, MC included. Zero personality) or very selfish / acting like immature children. There are like 6 named, recurring women in this series so far. Most are beautiful young women, and two elderly women. The author appears to be trying to add depth currently by (shocker) having one develop a crush on one of the other characters, and making another likeable by having the kids she stole from and got brutally beaten up, albeit accidentally, by her brother, become friends with her. Its just painful all around. Also, I want to ban the following phrases - ‘broke into a melee’ and ‘those guys’. Author, if youre going to have the characters saying thing like ‘henceforth’, its jarring when they turn around and call people ‘guys’. But I can fall asleep to the narrators voice, so Ill keep listening for now

When the fae beckon, few resist. Even fewer return. As a veil witch, I'm used to taking out the supernatural trash. Everything from poltergeists to vampires, you name it and I've dealt with it. So opening a paranormal cleanup business just seemed to make sense. If I'm already dealing with the pests, why not get paid? But when I accidentally breach the faerie realm to encounter a girl recently reported missing, start seeing the ghost of a witch whose disappearance has never been solved, and discover a Book of Shadows that opens only for me, I can't just go back to business as usual.

Mediocre magical story
Revisado: 02-03-23
This is my first time trying this author, and the book made me unsure if it was book 1 of a spinoff story, or just poorly designed. A lot of crazy stuff happened to the main character in the 15 years prior to the start of this novel, apparently, which is glossed over - not to say that it's not described, but the series of events that are detailed don't match with how the main and supporting characters then act (very blase). The MC has no personality and zero sense, though I can't really explain the latter without spoilers. Suffice to say that even having an education to the age of 11 is enough to learn about stranger danger, so she has no excuse. The magic system is also not well flushed out / described (again, maybe if this is a spinoff? I don't care enough to check as I will not be seeking out other books by this author), and the plot was predictable. I gave it 3 stars because I listened all the way through. I wouldn't recommend using a credit for this, but you could consider it if on big sale and you're bored

Just friends. That’s all Beckett Weaver and I have ever been. Sure, he’s a hot cowboy who left Wall Street behind to take over his family’s ranch. Yes, I’ve had a secret crush on him since we were 17. And who wouldn’t appreciate those strong hands, that massive chest, and the way he fills out a pair of Levis? He makes a girl sweat just looking at him...and I look. A lot. But I’m a single mom trying to move on with my life, and he’s running that ranch single-handedly while taking care of his elderly father.

33 going on 13
Revisado: 01-20-23
Are you a 30-odd year old adult, longing for the good 'ol middle school days? Do you think fondly back to your 13 year old self and the way your pimply face blushed at the mere mention of your crush? Are you desperate to read a book that reminds you of the times when your teenage heart was so full of angst and self doubt that you completely failed at communicating? Well, this is the book for you!
Seriously, the main characters in this story are horrible people. Self-absorbed (legit, who goes to meet a bunch of new girlfriends for the first time and immediately overwhelms the conversation by spilling everything about their divorce, dead mother, and embarrassing moments with the other womens' friend?), immature (sure, let's ruin our best friend's wedding by acting like a petulant child because of an easily remedied bad conversation with your gf), and just... unlikeable. The only people I was rooting for in this story were the side characters - the female main characters son, who I thought had great representation and was the highlight of the book, and the male main character's father.
I abandoned this book with about an hour left because I personally have no desire to listen to a book about 33 year olds thinking and acting like they're 2 decades younger than they are. Lazy character development and storytelling. Contrived drama is, like, so 1990s

Too much battle, not enough farmer
Revisado: 12-03-22
This book is weak compared with the rest of the series, to the point where I am not sure if I will continue to follow it. The first half of the story was ok, but the 'final' battle was like 3 hours long .. and not very interesting to boot. Overly contrived / obvious and rather skippable. Then a rushed resolution left me feeling unsatisfied.
I'm far more interested in what I thought was the concept of the series - that the most powerful man in the world can only save it though farming and NOT fighting. This idea is novel and worth reading. 3 hr battles are something any litRPG has, and frankly, was done worse than in many other stories. I'm pretty disappointed

Mediocre
Revisado: 12-01-22
Starting this review with two prefaces: first, I have been on a major litRPG binge the past year (starting with my dearly beloved Dungeon Crawler Carl, but encompassing Beware of Chicken, Mark of the Fool, Battlemage Farmer, and Primal Hunter, to name some of my favs). Second, at the time of writing this review I am actually finishing up listening to the third book in this series. So what's the take -
Pros;
- long books, and many of them so lots of content. if you're a binge reader/listener like me, this will keep you entertained for several days
- fairly interesting overall storyline. I am unsure what direction the planet is going in, and am interested in continuing to read to find out
- some good 'oooh and ahh' overpowered MC moments. I like scenes where the general public or enemies are surprised/impressed by the strength of the MC, if not done too much. This series appears to have a good amount without being too over the top for me
Cons
- poor writing. This is bad enough that it has taken me out of the story at points, and I have had to skip some fight scenes. The author has a pretty limited vocabulary and a bad habit of overusing words/phrases. In fights, the MC 'somehow manages' to do something (evade danger, land a blow, etc) A LOT. Bad enough you're cheaping out on your description of the action this way, but at least vary the phrase you use to write it! But this is nothing to the almost constant repetition of words within a single sentence. Maybe this would be less obvious in written form, but there are a lot of lines to the tune of "he did a quick body check and realized there was something wrong with his body". Like.... you could have ended that sentence earlier and not repeated the word body. It happens so often (with all different words) and it's to the point where I'm wincing every few minutes. Maybe this book is translated from a different language or something? If so, a new editor is urgently needed
- little to no character depth. As I said, I'm on book 3 but I'm not even sure if I like the MC. And not in a 'he's a complex antihero and idk how to feel about him' way. He doesn't have much personality. Nice ish, just entirely focused on stats development. Secondary characters are all 2 dimensional
- narration is so so. Pavi doesn't have a bad voice, but does mispronounce some words (e.g. pronounced 'differed' sound like 'deferred' a few times. More twitching ensued). Female voices are ok as well, but inflections are not always quite right for the tone of emotional state of a given character. Both of these things improve in the subsequent books though, so worth a barrel through!
In conclusion, not a litRPG that will break into my top 5, but not the bottom of my list either. Middling entertainment but plenty of it to binge on :)

I’m a full-time single dad to three daughters and CFO at Cloverleigh Farms. I don’t have time to fall in love - I’m too busy trying to run a business, keep the red socks out of the white laundry, and get the damn pillowcases on without owing a dollar to the swear jar. Sure, Frannie Sawyer is beautiful and sweet, but she’s 27, the boss’ daughter, and my new part-time nanny - which means she’s completely off-limits. It’s bad enough I can’t stop fantasizing about her. What kind of jerk would I be if I acted on the impulse to kiss her?

2 dimensional meh
Revisado: 06-16-22
So so characters and ok story, but as much as I enjoy no drama novels this one was ridiculous about it. Rather than address and tie up a major difference in life goals between the two characters, they just sent them off into the sunset having decided they're on the same page after all. If the characters were more likeable maybe I'd forgive the sloppy conclusion, but there was nothing to them and, worse, each had a tendency to edge toward immature and unlikeable. I finished this story through, but it wasn't worth the credit

staccato. voice. actor.
Revisado: 03-29-22
Couldn't finish this book, not for lack of interest in the story, but the narrator emphasized almost every word in the sentence, leading to this awkward staccato sound that was grating after 4 chapters. I might try to read instead of listen, but the story was only so so interesting. As of this 4/5 chapter point there are no particular personalities demonstrated by either the main character or any of the supporting ones.

At one point during the party, Alessandra said, “There’s nothing like a girl’s first love.” I knew she was talking about the first smash hit by my band, 22 Goats. Alessandra said it was the first song she’d heard by us and it “hit her like a ton of bricks”. Ironic, seeing as how I was having the same reaction from being in her presence.

Sappy with a side of cringe
Revisado: 03-27-22
This story was a strange one for me. I'd categorize it as a 'sweet' romance, but it was a bit too much so in a few ways.
First, it was so much on the sweet end that the love scenes were awkward. Even the words themselves made me wince while listening. I had to skip scenes and that is not my norm for this genre.
Also, the main characters were so sweet it was also illogical. I don't see how either of them ended up where they were in life with how awkward they supposedly were. Several other scenes had to be skipped because I couldn't take the conversations between characters. ((spoiler alert))) If my SO went around asking ALL of our mutual friends for sex advice specific to our relationship, I'd be pissed and also think there was something wrong with him. Google it like a normal person rather than blabbing details you haven't been given permission to share with others ((end spoiler alert))
Finally, a lot of belief suspension was needed with regard to the FMCs career. Over the top
On the other hand, I was very pleasantly surprised by the musical additions here. with the exception of one scene where I think the voice actor actually sang part of the MMCs song (again, cringe and skip forwarding). but the clearly professionally recorded songs were a great addition

Not sure why I finished
Revisado: 02-04-22
Oof. Narrator was horrific with female voices. Storyline was bland (need to read previous books to get the full picture? but then again, who cares). The characters were 2-dimensional. By the end of the book I could say I didn't care if they all died from the Hunt. But I was on a long road trip so I finished the whole thing despite itself, and it didn't particularly affront me, so 2 stars I guess. I will not be reading anything by this author, and certainly not listening to anything containing female characters by this narrator, again
